Historia
In the summer of 1934, “a sickly, pathetic marmoset” called Mitz came into the care of Leonard Woolf. He nursed her back to health and from then on was rarely seen without her on his shoulder. A ubiquitous presence in Bloomsbury society, Mitz moved with Leonard and Virginia Woolf and their circle, developing special relationships with such associates as T. S. Eliot and Vita Sackville-West. She accompanied the Woolfs on their travels and even played an important role in helping them to escape a close call with Nazis in Germany.

Delightful

Short, lovely story. Nunez writes so lovingly about animals, and about Leonard and Virginia Woolf.

Historia
Among the most celebrated and beloved novels of 2021, Anthony Doerr’s gorgeous third novel is a triumph of imagination and compassion, a soaring story about children on the cusp of adulthood in worlds in peril, who find resilience, hope—and a book. In Cloud Cuckoo Land, Doerr has created a magnificent tapestry of times and places that reflects our vast interconnectedness—with other species, with each other, with those who lived before us, and with those who will be here after we’re gone.

Definitely worth it!
Revisado: 12-20-22
This is not as propulsive a listen as Doerr’s All the Light You Cannot See, but it is worth your time. Five separate stories gradually- very gradually - coalesce, each of them compelling. What binds them is a reverence for libraries, books, and one ancient story. The reader is excellent! Enjoy it.

As the NYT review says, a gorgeous book
Revisado: 08-14-22
Anthony Marra has such a wonderful feel for language and extraordinary skill for creating memorable characters. But what else to expect from the author of “Constellation “? And Carlotta Brendan is a narration star — she had to inhabit multiple accents and did so with aplomb.

Historia
In Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Egan's highly acclaimed first novel, set in 1978, the political drama and familial tensions of the 1960s form a backdrop for the world of Phoebe O'Connor, age eighteen. Phoebe is obsessed with the memory and death of her sister Faith, a beautiful idealistic hippie who died in Italy in 1970. In order to find out the truth about Faith's life and death, Phoebe retraces her steps from San Francisco across Europe, a quest which yields both complex and disturbing revelations about family, love, and Faith's lost generation.

Metaphor upon metaphor
Revisado: 06-06-22
This early Egan novel, set in the 70s, tells a story of growing up and family tragedy. It could have used a mighty editor who could have pared down the habit of describing every sound, sight, and atmospheric fact in clunky metaphor. The story kept me going but it was annoying. And I couldn’t quite forgive the narrator for pronouncing Chianti with a Ch like Charles….

A Unique Family Story
Revisado: 03-02-21
A story of tragedy, love and loss. Well written but strangely humorless. Even in a story that is deeply emotional, some humor is called for. The narrator is fine but loses track of the characters’ voices on occasion.

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Historia
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Historia
The day Anna McDonald's quiet, respectable life explodes starts off like all the days before: Packing up the kids for school, making breakfast, listening to yet another true crime podcast. Then her husband comes downstairs with an announcement, and Anna is suddenly, shockingly alone. Reeling, desperate for distraction, Anna returns to the podcast. Other people's problems are much better than one's own - a sunken yacht, a murdered family, a hint of international conspiracy. But this case actually is Anna's problem. She knows one of the victims from an earlier life.

You’ll love Anna
Revisado: 09-28-19
Denise Mina, as usual, doesn’t disappoint. (If you haven’t read or listened to Garnethill do it soon....) In Conviction, the first person narrator, Anna, starts her day listening to a true crime podcast, and then her carefully crafted world falls apart. The interplay of her past, her current troubles, and the truth around that podcast make for a propulsive mystery. Excellent narrator, by the way, who handles multiple voices and accents smoothly. A really good listen.

Wonderful reader, marvelous story
Revisado: 10-04-18
I’m a big fan of Kate Atkinson — I’ll read the phone book if she wrote it. Here she delves into England’s MI5 just before WWII, and a young woman typist turned spy. Not quite a thriller — more slow and steady. But the narrator is soooooo good that you can’t stop listening. Definitely worth your time.

Annoying narrator ruins great story
Revisado: 11-11-11
I've heard great things about this book but the narrator's repetitive, unwavering cadence never allows me to lose myself in the story. I'm two or three hours in and considering abandoning it. Mr. Graham's delivery chops up the sentences into an odd, sing-song iambic pentameter. A terrible shame since most Audible narrators are so skilled at enhancing a book, not diminishing it.
