Historia
Acheron Colony was supposed to be humanity's greatest windfall. Using long-range sensors, the planet tested out as a super-Earth—but the reality is frightening. Instead of a green world bursting with life, the colonists find a dead rock covered in ash. Something has dismantled every organic molecule on Acheron—and no one knows how or why. When a mysterious signal that defies explanation begins to pulse from an alien ruin, the colonists panic. Something ancient was here long before them, and the signal, like a heartbeat, won't let them forget it.

Fun but not fantastic
Revisado: 03-29-25
I enjoyed the first two books in the series. Sure it’s the same old main character. A strong tough brute of a man who at first seems to be a dummy, but in reality simply hides his intellect for his own reasons. I mean, come on you don’t get to be top of your game by being something other than the very best. The story is interesting enough, but something is missing. It’s not BV Larson’s best work.

The first part is slow, but cranks up to epic
Revisado: 11-27-24
This is another really good story. Maybe the first quarter of the book is character development and 'kinda' slow, but it is necessary for the great SciFi that comes next in the rest of the book. The setting is that of the naval style of operation in space, which likely comes from the author's background. Relatable characters and a generally realistic set of political differences make the book fit today's world of good guys and bad actors. In any case, the story moves along fast and I discovered that paying close attention was absolutely necessary. I found myself listening again to make sure I did not miss something. I can't wait to see what happens next.
As I've said in an earlier review, this is great hard core SciFi. The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was due to the need for me to pay such close attention and occasionally rewind.

A hidden gem, solid SciFi, great story
Revisado: 10-25-24
Truly good SciFi, a levelheaded story (not full of magic) that starts gradually, not with a bang, but with development, we get to know the characters and the situation. The space borne Navy style military protocol is woven in nicely, as are the very human characters. Soon enough though, interesting things happen and the adventure starts. What's not to love about that! This concise (not full of fluff and relatively short) book brings to mind some Star Trek episodes and some current situations too, where very real conflict exists and a maybe a bad government agent or two is secretly involved.
The narration is superb and moves along nicely. I typically listen to other audible books at 1.2x or 1.25x as so often the narration is slow. Not here. This book moves along quickly and I found that if I am not paying attention or if something distracted me, I might miss something and I would have to rewind. I found that 1x speed is perfect, that's a pleasant surprise.
Even though the book is relatively short, there is a lot packed into the story and I probably should listen to it a second time. I can't wait to listen to the next book. As I mentioned above, this is a hidden gem.

Historia
United Nations Special Operations Command sent an elite expeditionary force of soldiers and pilots out on a simple recon mission, and somehow along the way they sparked an alien civil war. Now the not-at-all-merry band of pirates is in desperate trouble, again. Their stolen alien starship is falling apart, thousands of light years from home. The ancient alien AI they nicknamed Skippy is apparently dead, and even if they can by some miracle revive him, he might never be the same.

Another really fun book, full of space adventure, wild tactics, an egotistical beer can and much much more. No sense in writing a long review, there are plenty of those. Great entertainment and narration! Can't wait to listen to the next book in the series.

Enjoyable book, classic BV Larson, distinct
Revisado: 10-22-23
At least some of the negative reviews seem to be of some other book. I purchased the audiobook despite those poor reviews, and I am glad I did. This book did not contain the subject matter in those reviews. Not sure what book was referenced, but it was not this.
This is a classic BV Larson space adventure, with some interesting technology, good character development, some discovery, and exceptionally easy to listen to. The main character is an average working spaceman, who has one advantage over his peers. He is from Earth and his strength exceeds that of those born elsewhere. This fact helps him to move up in status as the book progresses.
Can't wait for the next one in the series.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

The 2nd biography I've read on Oppie, fantastic
Revisado: 08-31-23
I absolutely loved this biography, as it brought Oppie to life, human flaws and all. The guy was clearly brilliant, conflicted, loved America, and stood up for what he felt was right. He associated with the most brilliant minds ever to have lived, fascinating. His communist affiliations were not glossed over, and the book clearly illustrated how Oppie's political view's matured over time.

Historia
How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don’t understand the difference between the myths of pseudoscience and the testable hypotheses of science? Pulitzer Prize-winning author and distinguished astronomer Carl Sagan argues that scientific thinking is critical not only to the pursuit of truth but to the very well-being of our democratic institutions.

I remember Sagan well, long winded and wordy
Revisado: 08-31-23
Expertly narrated, especially Seth's portions, this book is typical Sagan. That is to say, it contains many good points, plenty of real world examples, along with great information. But I swear Sagan is, at times, just too wordy, so I felt that it drones on for hours. It is a bit dated in places, but that's OK, the science has not really changed much. It's too bad Sagan is long gone, as he could sit down with a good editor and revise this book down into perfection with more recent information and fewer words.

I wasn’t supposed to survive. The station has been hit. Everyone around me is dead. I have 11 hours of life support left and no way of contacting Earth. I’m alone. I’m stranded. I’m desperate. But I’m alive. The more of the station I explore, the surer I get that this was no accident. Someone did this, and I don't think they're finished yet.

Enjoyed the book, good story, needs a bit of polishing
Revisado: 01-24-23
The story was excellent, good sci-fi and fun. I do wish the author had spent a bit more time refining the story. As there are too many cheesy, minor details. Those details make the first part of the story Sound a bit wimpy and I was tempted to stop listening. Glad I didn’t, as the story evolved into something good, with real struggles to overcome.

Revisado: 11-13-22
To say I enjoyed this audio book immensely seems to fall short of the honor the men in the story deserve. Words fail me, so I’ll simply say that it was a fascinating true story, written by the worlds best storyteller and narrated perfectly. As the story progressed i got to know a little about each of the characters.
