Historia
Human beings are primates, and primates are political animals. Our brains, therefore, are designed not just to hunt and gather but also to help us get ahead socially, often via deception and self-deception. But while we may be self-interested schemers, we benefit by pretending otherwise. The less we know about our own ugly motives, the better - and thus, we don't like to talk, or even think, about the extent of our selfishness. This is "the elephant in the brain".

Human Nature at its best/worst
Revisado: 02-19-24
I thoroughly enjoyed the studies and the comparisons. Even contrasting animals to people and people to animals really helped me to understand the topic better.
If I were to take away one thing from this book it would be that even we do not understand all of our own motives. Our subconscious mind hides our deep down motives to protect us from judgment. Think about it like this; have you ever been asked why you did something and you weren't clearly able to articulate it? It's probably happened to all of us.
The biggest point would be to take a step back when we've made decisions and try to look at the hidden motives behind those decisions. Whether it's about ourselves or the other people around us. This will in the end, help us to understand ourselves and other people better.

Good books, not deep
Revisado: 01-04-24
I would have liked to see a deeper breakdown of each of the books which could have meant that the book could have focused on 25 books instead of 50. I do like the fact that the author wrote about the person that suggested the book as well. As the author of the book and information about the book itself.

Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

Revisado: 11-18-23
I loved how much information that is valuable is packed into this book. It's powerful even though at times, the information can be a bit woo-woo. Anyway. Rick knows how to get people to reach their creative best.

Revisado: 10-18-23
I really loved reading the history of Dune, and Ryan does a great job of narrating. This book also also educates us on how educational and entertaining the story of Dune is. Much of the background information we learn about Frank Herbert and how he came up with the idea of Dune is also helpful to understand the book.

Historia
E. D. Hirsch, author of The Knowledge Deficit, draws on recent findings in neuroscience and data from France to provide new evidence for the argument that a carefully planned, knowledge-based elementary curriculum is essential to providing the foundations for children's life success and ensuring equal opportunity for students of all backgrounds. In the absence of a clear, common curriculum, Hirsch contends that tests are reduced to measuring skills rather than content, and that students from disadvantaged backgrounds cannot develop the knowledge base to support high achievement.

Great for ELA Teachers
Revisado: 09-15-23
I'm an English teacher here in Surabaya and I thought that listening to this book was very useful for my classes. However, for an average teacher, I believe that the book goes into depth for curriculum heads and principals. It's a worthy read for any educator.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

A touching tribute to Oppenheimer
Revisado: 08-30-23
I'm so happy to have read this book. After watching the recent 2023 film entitled Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan.
The book filled in many of the gaps that the film could not cover. And by the end, I actually had a few tears starting to Well up in my eyes. Although very long, I enjoyed every single second of the book and I feel like any person that wants to know about Oppenheimer's life coming, his struggles and accomplishments, and the way that the government treated. A hero scientist, then you should read this book.

Deep Dive into Literature and Christianity
Revisado: 05-22-23
This was a well pieced together book filled with several references and deep dives into award-winning authors and books from fairly close to present today all the way back to ancient times. The author has explained well the relation of the book to biblical interpretations and examples. It's definitely worth checking out if you're interested in how deep literature has a deep connection to real life and what it can teach us about living well.

Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Untuck this recording quality

Poor sound quality and too many F****
Revisado: 04-26-23
The overuse of language was, overdone! also it sounds like the author was just recording from her house, you could hear the pages turning and sometimes accidentally hitting the microphone. You could also hear some sort of fan in the background or AC or something like that.
You'd think that an author with a PhD and many other degrees would be smart enough to hire a professional studio or something like that. The message and the book itself is somewhat useful but only for people going through drastic anxiety and depression. The author does know her content well.
