At 75 years old, John Perry is after a fresh start - so, naturally, he joins the army. Earth's military machine can transform elderly recruits, restoring their lost youth. But in return, its Colonial Defence Force demands two years of hazardous service in space. This is how Perry finds himself in a new body crafted from his original DNA. A genetically enhanced and upgraded new body, ready for battle. But upgrades alone won't keep Perry safe. He'll be fighting for his life on the front line as he defends humanity's colonies.

High school level writing

Just my personal opinion, I know many people love this book. I felt the story was something a teenager would write. Just going from planet to planet destroying aliens. No real emotion. Once, one character showed some emotion but that was forgotten by the time we destroy the next random group of aliens.

Historia
After forming a coalition of human resistance against the enemy invasion, Dalinar Kholin and his Knights Radiant have spent a year fighting a protracted, brutal war. Neither side has gained an advantage. Now, as new technological discoveries begin to change the face of the war, the enemy prepares a bold and dangerous operation. The arms race that follows will challenge the very core of the Radiant ideals and potentially reveal the secrets of the ancient tower that was once the heart of their strength.

Too large a scale while also lowering the scale.
Revisado: 02-26-25
I have to say I'm not enjoying how the story keeps getting grander and grander. The overall scope of the story has gone from tangible stakes to just daft, over the top stakes, while the character story got shrunk to pretty mundane events. Each storyline is waaay too drawn out. and getting flashbacks further slows the pace, while also being characters you don't really care for. Already being invested in the story and the original characters (except Shallan) is what keeps me going.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

I don't get the hype
Revisado: 07-01-24
I enjoyed the tale of evolution and society on the planet. I really did not enjoy the story on the ship. the planet story, while interesting, was not amazing, as others have suggested. Finally, I was unimpressed with the ending.

Historia
Half a century after the Doomsday Battle, the uneasy balance of Dark Forest Deterrence keeps the Trisolaran invaders at bay. Earth enjoys unprecedented prosperity due to the infusion of Trisolaran knowledge, and, with human science advancing and the Trisolarans adopting Earth culture, it seems that the two civilizations can coexist peacefully as equals, without the terrible threat of mutually assured annihilation. But peace has made humanity complacent.

A must read for Physics lovers
Revisado: 08-29-23
The ideas brought forward throughout this book are what make it a 5 stsr book. but the story can drag and the narrator can be a bit slow. but those complaints are irrelevant because the mind expanding nature of the book trumps it.

The Trisolarian fleet has left their home world and will arrive in four centuries' time. But the Sophons and their extradimensional emissaries are already here. This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a last-ditch defence that grants four individuals almost absolute power to design secret strategies, hidden through deceit and misdirection. Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer, is baffled by his new status. All he knows is that he's the one Wallfacer that Trisolaris wants dead.

Cloud Atlas features six characters in interlocking stories, each interrupting the one before it: a reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan's California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified dinery server on death row; and Zachry, a young Pacific islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation.

Rather overrated book
Revisado: 11-29-21
I personally found the book to be a bit boring and tedious. In the first half of the book you trudge through each story and once they begin to become interesting they end. By the time you come back to those stories in the second half of the book you have forgotten all the characters and what was happening in each story. Would not recommend.
