Andrew Sachs reads these four classic stories of suspense - "The Signalman" by Charles Dickens, "The Haunted Doll's House" by M. R. James, "The Room in the Tower" by E. F. Benson, and "The Bus-Conductor" by E. F. Benson. These spine-tingling tales, from the golden age of the ghost story, are sure to leave you with a creeping sense of dread.

Def worth the purchase
Revisado: 03-01-18
I really loved two of the stories: The Haunted Dollhouse and The Room in the Tower. The other two were worth it, but I had a harder time getting into them- at first at least. They will all linger and stay with me. Narrator was fantastic. He really captured the feeling of the stories. I also really enjoyed that there was mood music. It actually really helped set the stage of the stories and gave it that extra "oomph". The stories were just long enough to satisfy, but not so long that I grew bored. I'm a little sad that there were only four however.

Historia
In 1967, not long after the Six-Day War, three young Arab men ventured into the town of Ramle, in what is now Jewish Israel. They were cousins, on a pilgrimage to see their childhood homes; their families had been driven out of Palestine nearly 20 years earlier. One cousin had a door slammed in his face, and another found his old house had been converted into a school. But the third, Bashir Al-Khairi, was met at the door by a young woman called Dalia, who invited them in.

Empathetic
Revisado: 11-13-17
As a Jew by choice I read this book to get some idea of the Israel/Palestine conflict. I wanted a view from both sides and I got one. The fact that the author narrated the story made it that much more powerful. You get the full intention of her work with inflections and emphasis in all the right ways. I would highly recommend.

I liked it but...
Revisado: 11-12-17
I'll preface this by saying that I really enjoy thriller/ghost/paranormal anything and am rather easily entertained so the story was actually quite good, however the part I can't get over is the author's incredibly annoying female characters. This is particularly disappointing as the main character is a female. They (referring to this and the other book I've read from him- Follow You Home) make unrealistic decisions and come off as paranoid shrews/crazy ladies. I get some women are like that, but the women in these books just aren't believable and make me really dislike the main characters. I let it go with Follow You Home because the main female character in that book is actually not a good person at all, but in this case it just ruined the whole story for me. Some of the plot twists I definitely didn't see coming, but I probably won't read or listen to anymore of Mr. Edwards works based off of his poorly written characters. I'm pretty bummed about it because the plots in both of these books are very well done- I just can't abide the narrative.

Historia
Anna Kendrick's autobiographical collection of essays amusingly recounts memorable moments throughout her life, from her middle-class upbringing in New England to the blockbuster movies that have made her one of Hollywood's most popular actresses today. Expanding upon the witty and ironic dispatches for which she is known, Anna Kendrick's essays offer her one-of-a-kind commentary on the absurdities she's experienced on her way to and from the heart of pop culture.

Loved it!
Revisado: 11-12-17
I really love Anna Kendrick. I made a Twitter account just to read her tweets and this book was awesome. I very rarely listen to an audio book within a couple of days, but I was taking every opportunity in between activities to listen to this- it was that good. If you enjoy her humor you'll love listening to Scrappy Little Nobody. A lot of what she talks about, especially in her dating scenes, makes her a little more human, for lack of a better word. She's someone I want to have as a friend. Lol.

Too much waiting
Revisado: 11-12-17
I felt the same way about this as I felt about Mr. Brown's last book, Inferno. There was too much waiting. There was constant allusion to the mysterious reveal at the end of the book. And we are talking about the very, very end of the book. What I liked about his previous work was that there was a sense of satisfaction when a mini task was completed up until the eventual climax (deciphering the anagrams, finding and opening the codex, finding the tombs, etc). In his last two books there is too much waiting and not enough action in between. By Chapter 26 I was thoroughly annoyed but had invested so much time in the book I had to finish. The ending was somewhat satisfactory but I don't think it was enough to say that the wait was worth it. Not only that but some of the parts (namely with the artificial intelligence character) were extremely obvious. I guessed the "villain" less than a third of the way through and without the sense of breathless anticipation it left much to be desired. All I will say is, if you've read Inferno and thought it was slow, this will be worse. When Mr. Brown decides to publish again, I will read it, but if it's anything like these last two books I may just write him off. I am easily entertained and love getting caught up in the suspended disbelief of reading (or listening) which makes this a particularly disappointing experience. The narrator does a very good job, however, and it saves much of the book. I love his ability to use accents and he really brings much of the characters alive in a way I could never have done on my own. Worth it, but just barely.

She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up.

Loved, loved, loved
Revisado: 09-27-16
This book was engaging from beginning to end. The mystery of what Melanie is, where she is, what makes her special and what will happen to her are all quite fascinating. Not your typical zombie book at all. The ending was particularly surprising for me and it really made you think. The characters were all very well written and developed. I hated and loved everyone to the degree I believe the author wanted. It was very believable for this type of story. I don't want to give anything away, so I will just say this is very much worth the read/listen. I'm usually not a big fan of zombie storylines because I feel they lack engagement with uninfected, but this just gave it a terrifying spin and I enjoyed every second. Would highly recommend.

Right up my alley!
Revisado: 09-27-16
These types of books are the things I live for! These gems only surface once in a blue moon. The Butterfly Garden is creepy, compelling and captivating. I love crime reads/listens especially when the killer has an unusual MO. The fact that you know the outcome from the beginning was interesting, but that won't stop you from experiencing some major twists. I can't wait to listen to the next book in the series.
