Historia
Forty years ago Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky wrote a series of breathtakingly original studies undoing our assumptions about the decision-making process. Their papers showed the ways in which the human mind erred systematically when forced to make judgments about uncertain situations. Their work created the field of behavioral economics, revolutionized Big Data studies, advanced evidence-based medicine, led to a new approach to government regulation, and made Michael Lewis' work possible.

It was nice to learn more about the background and professional dynamic between these intellectual titans. However, it was also somewhat predictable. I found myself wishing there was another book about complementary academic duos.

Historia
In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning.

the story tracked the author's ups and downs on the trail... was hard sledding at times for the listener but overall it was an enjoyable and insightful first person perspective.

Not bad, not great.
Revisado: 05-11-14
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The story beats you over the head with survivalist tactics and a phony-sounding family dynamic. However, the whole time I listened to this, I kept wishing for more realistic scientific background on the virus. The main character is not particularly heroic or special. He doesn't have much/any special knowledge that could have made the story more compelling.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
The most intriguing aspect of the story was the the tension of the neighborhood and local political dynamics between families.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Not unless the screen adaptation took it in a different direction.

Historia
Look around you and think for a minute: Is America too crowded? For years, we have been warned about the looming danger of overpopulation: people jostling for space on a planet that's busting at the seams and running out of oil and food and land and everything else. It's all bunk. The population bomb never exploded. Instead, statistics from around the world make clear that since the 1970s, we've been facing exactly the opposite problem: people are having too few babies.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Religious people who want to justify their beliefs.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Annoyance and disappointment. I had hoped this book would lay down a foundation of facts and perhaps extrapolate from there and provide some insights. Instead, it became clear the author was trotting out examples to support his opinions and not much else.

Historia
North America was settled by people with distinct religious, political, and ethnographic characteristics, creating regional cultures that have been at odds with one another ever since. Subsequent immigrants didn't confront or assimilate into an "American" or "Canadian" culture, but rather into one of the 11 distinct regional ones that spread over the continent each staking out mutually exclusive territory. In American Nations, Colin Woodard leads us on a journey through the history of our fractured continent....

Connects a lot of dots
Revisado: 11-19-13
Would you listen to American Nations again? Why?
Yes, there's plenty of meat on the bone for a second listen.
What did you like best about this story?
It provides a framework from which to understand many peculiarities of culture that separate the various "nations" of America. I think it can provide a more rational way of understanding some of the deeply rooted differences that tend to exasperate without proper context.
Any additional comments?
If I were to level a criticism, it would be that Woodard gets a bit too personal at the end of the book.
