One of his earliest and least interesting novels. I’m working my way through them all and am looking forward to better works.

As a slightly right of center American, I appreciated the care the authors took to point out the illiberalism found on both sides of the political spectrum. I thought their identification of the sources of the issues that face the American heritage of free speech to be comprehensive and their prescriptions for remedies to be a panacea for much of what is ailing reasoned discourse and polarization in our nation. It’s definitely a book worth your time.

I’m often less of a fan off author narration, but Rikki gave a nearly flawless performance.

Somewhere there is a ticked-off eighth-grader who just realized that his or her work writing a report on Norway was plagerized for this book.

The introduction was probably written while the student was in sixth grade. Later the report that became the introduction was expanded upon.

Seriously, as others have said, this is a terrible book. Historically, there are significant gaps. For example, major portions of Viking history are ignored. Additionally, amazing statements are made about prehistory with no citations or sources specified.

Sentence structure, transitions, and connections between concepts are all lacking. It truly sounds juvenile.

Just Mercy is an excellent book that covers much more ground than the movie that bears its name.

The audiobook features the best author narration I’ve ever heard. Typically this is a low bar, but Bryan Stevenson was powerful.

It is shocking and abhorrent how many innocent people have been wrongly convicted. Equally so, it is sad how many guilty individuals have been ignored by the system and been meted out grossly unfair judgements.

Stevenson describes the problems of our judicial system in a way that details the outrages while holding out hope that it can be fixed.

What would have made The E-Myth Revisited better?

While there have been a few useful points in the book, like the phases that all businesses go through, I am stopping at 1:45 into the 8:05 listen. It's simply too painful. The narrative method the author employs is juvenile. Given the fact that he has been coaching business for 35+ years, I would have appreciated a more fact-based approach. This works, this doesn't. I never heard the author back up the narrative with statistics. One of the lessons entrepreneurs who survive learn is that you don't work outside your core competencies, you hire those out to other entrepreneurs. Mr. Gerber would have been better off with a co-author.

Has The E-Myth Revisited turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, but it has colored my opinion of my colleagues that recommended it.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The E-Myth Revisited exemplifies why the vast majority of authors should not narrate their own books. The author's accent detracts further from book, which is saying a lot.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The E-Myth Revisited?

I would re-write the entire book. The author's examples are amateurish. I think there are some valuable lessons tucked away but I'm not going spend anymore time trying to pan for gold.

There are a couple of problems with the book from my perspective. First it is incredibly subjective. The author doesn't offer any perspective other than his own. There's no evidence that he's successfully taught others his methods or that they worked for other people. Second, the author does himself no favors by narrating himself. While not a terrible narrator, he simply isn't a professional.

While not exactly the same subject matter, I prefer David Rock's Your Brain at Work for its research.
