Historia
Born just six years after the founding of the United States, Martin Van Buren seemed destined for politics. Known throughout his career as “Little Van” for his short stature, his impact on America was certainly not minimal. From the age of 14, the democratic Van Buren began a political career as an apprentice. He would later go on to fulfill several positions including senator for New York state, a brief stint as governor, Andrew Jackson’s secretary of state, and eventually president.

The length of this very brief book severely limits the depth the author can achieve in presenting Van Buren's life. However, as a precis of his political career, it is more pleasing & comprehensive than most short biographies I have read. The biography featured politics but very nicely established Van Buren's early & personal life. Well done in the time utilized.
The author chose to refer to Van Buren as 'Martin', which seemed a bit familiar to me. Definitely whet my appetite to learn more about President Van Buren, though!

Has a very engaging storyline- as biography
Revisado: 01-12-25
There is a clear storyline; no dry recitation of 'facts' to plow through. That said, there are plenty of historical touch points to stitch the story of Arnold's life into more well known historical touch-stones. Especially during WWII. Arnold's contribution to the United States' Air Force development I found to be very engaging. I've always wondered about the specifics of his contribution, as the more infamous Billy Mitchell was where more of my information lay. This book is so much more than just filling in after Mitchell's efforts. Arnold was present during that time, and as he was a much less contentious and much more likeable person, he was much more effective. During WWII especially, he was equally as driven as Mitchell ever was.
The narrator is one I've listened to before. This book is well read. I would not enjoy this narrator as much if the book was a fictional account where the distinction between characters is critical. As that was not the case here, it is well read.

One of my favorites!
Revisado: 12-17-19
This performance reading by Nadia May is better than average. She distinguishes each character very well without biasing the listener's impression of the suspects - aside from that conveyed in the author's text. I enjoyed her performance muchly. And as the reading has such important on one's enjoyment I feel it best to start with my opinion of it. Also Ngaio Marsh's books on Audible are read by at least 6 different people, offering many different performances & interpretations.
As for the story itself: this is one of Ngaio Marsh's best. The fact that Inspector Alleyn's wife Agatha Troy is a major part of the story is a bonus as I enjoy her character very much.

Hung up on mispronunciation
Revisado: 07-12-19
My issue is not with the story. In fact it is a good representation of the Perry Mason oeuvre. I don't care for characterization of Paul Drake based on the fact that it is arch, almost squeaky, and conveys indecision in Drake's personality. Almost as though he is a whinging or whiney type. But the straw that broke this camel's back is the mispronunciation - repeatedly! - of the word 'sidereal'. The reader enunciates it as if it were two words that happen to be stuck conveniently together - 'side' and 'real'. I'd have rated it lower than 3 stars except the story itself doesn't deserve a lower rating.

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

Engaging. Enjoy it often.
Revisado: 01-05-19
Wouk seamlessly introduces into the historical timeline and it's people a group of characters that I found appealing and relatable. I am a bit of a 'recent history' buff, and have always enjoyed the 20th century time frame. For the most part Wouk also sticks to accepted 'fact'; when he deviates from or reinterprets history it is set within the context of the character's opinions and thoughts. A very nice way to present the story and express the emotional reaction to events that are history to us, the reader, but are fresh and happening to the characters. I also felt Wouk stayed true in many ways to the time- the characters speak differently than now, their thoughts are couched in such a way as to create a sense of the time and place.
The narration is excellent. Mr. Periseau does the things one expects of good narrators- different voices/accents for each character, and he doesn't speak too quickly either. I didn't find him slow; I felt his delivery allowed the story to include me. As a side note, he also narrates the sequel "War and Remembrance".

Historia
In 1912, at the height of World War I, brilliant Shakespeare expert Elizebeth Smith went to work for an eccentric tycoon on his estate outside Chicago. The tycoon had close ties to the US government, and he soon asked Elizebeth to apply her language skills to an exciting new venture: code breaking. There she met the man who would become her husband, groundbreaking cryptologist William Friedman. Though she and Friedman are in many ways the Adam and Eve of the NSA, Elizebeth's story, incredibly, has never been told.

Performance is well done.
Text is wonderful look into the lives of two people, though focus is on Elizebeth. She is the common thread that weaves together history, codes, and inspiration.
