In January of 2012, a police truck parked on a trail in Griffith Park in Los Angeles, California. A member of the K-9 Unit opened the door, and a police dog named Indiana Bones jumped out. Indy quickly caught a scent and led his handler to a mound of dirt just off the path. Indy pawed at the dirt and revealed the top of a plastic bag. The dog’s handler reached into the dirt with her gloved hands, pulled out the bag, looked inside, and saw two dismembered human feet and a hand. Absolutely Brilliant.
Revisado: 11-22-24
This thriller is unlike anything I’ve ever read. Without giving too much away, I have to say: bravo to the author for crafting a story so dark and twisted that I almost stopped listening, yet so unique, jaw-dropping, and absolutely brilliant that I simply couldn’t.

Historia
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Phenomenal
Revisado: 06-30-24
Without question the most phenomenal true crime book I’ve ever read. To share in such detail what it took to catch DeAngelo was an unexpected gift to the reader; it opened my eyes like no other book has to the absolute dedication and tirelessness of investigators who work to find the monsters among us, and to hear the voices of the survivors and their willingness to share their profoundly personal thoughts and experiences, well, I felt privileged.
As a result of reading this book I am going to order a DNA kit.
Thank you to everyone who worked on this case and brought DeAngelo to justice, especially Paul Holes.

Historia
Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order. Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents.

A search for truth leads to more questions.
Revisado: 06-26-24
Ok, this book has inspired in me so many questions - not just about the subject matter, but about what I think I know and what I don’t know; how many lies have I been fed over my entire life by the media and by the government?
Moreover, I think it’s about time those of us who have questions wear out “conspiracy theorist” hats proudly. Why? Because we have questions and we care to know the truth.

Horrendous Narration
Revisado: 01-10-24
I’ll bet the plot is fantastic, but I can’t stand the inflections in the narrator’s voice. It’s horrendous. I’m supposed to believe this woman who talks like a 10 year old works in a prison?

Historia
Over the last two decades, there has been an inescapable rise of anger and aggression across our planet. Hate speech has become increasingly prevalent online, Western governments are turning towards authoritarianism and populism, and extremist groups are rising across both the left and the right ends of the political spectrum. Every day, it seems, we're hearing more angry voices and fearful opinions, we're seeing more threats and frightening news, and we're reacting faster and less rationally.

Very Interesting & Engaging
Revisado: 12-03-23
I learned a lot about the history of media and appreciated the author’s attempt to convince his readers that toxic media (and social media) could be a thing of the past if we all play our part.
I think, though, that he missed some opportunities to shed more light on the subject of manufactured outrage.
For instance, he could have made mention that the loudest 10% on social media, particularly X (Twitter) post approx 90% of the content that feeds our collective outrage (CBC, 2009).
That is not insignificant, and I was disappointed that he didn’t address it.
Also, I knocked a star off the rating of this book because the author took Fox to task, but not CNN. C’mon now.
In addition, the subject of the Covid vaccine and his story about how he handled online questions within his group clearly showed he deemed himself more educated on the matter because he has friends in the field of science, the insinuation being if you had questions about the efficacy and safety of the vaccines you were ill-informed or conspiratorial.
All in all, though, this was an insightful book, gave me food for thought and I was kept engaged.

Fascinating & Enlightening
Revisado: 11-26-23
I’ve long thought being a CSI would be fascinating, but after reading this book I’m glad my fascination with crime and crime scenes never led me to actually pursue such a career.
There’s no way I could handle the truly awful, gory and heart-wrenching scenes attended by those who work in the CSI field.
This was a fascinating (and often funny) book that will make you appreciate these unsung heroes & squash any ideas you may have had about going for a ride along, haha.
