Historia
There is only one way to travel across the Wastelands: on the Trans-Siberian Express, a train as famous for its luxury as for its danger. The train is never short of passengers, eager to catch sight of Wastelands creatures more miraculous and terrifying than anything they could imagine. But on the train's last journey, something went horribly wrong, though no one seems to remember what exactly happened. Not even Zhang Weiwei, who has spent her life onboard and thought she knew all of the train’s secrets.

Sorry but I had to DNF
Revisado: 04-21-25
I got about 1/2 way through but just couldn't waste any more time one this one. The characters seemed flat and the overarching premise of a dystopian world just isn't for me.

More Hallmark Than Mystery
Revisado: 04-21-25
If you like a cozy little town with Grandma's restaurant and your former high school classmates/lover, then this is the book for you. However, if you like your mystery more realistic and less romantic - don't read this book. I was fooled by the reviews that gave it 5 stars. The premise was good but the end result was disappointing.

Historia
Ike Randolph has been out of jail for fifteen years, with not so much as a speeding ticket in all that time. But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. The last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered, along with Isiah’s white husband, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss. Derek’s father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed his father was a criminal. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld, though, and he wants to know who killed his boy.

Must Read!
Revisado: 04-19-25
I'm pretty picky about 5 star reviews but this book had it all! The characters were smart, funny and engaging. The premise hit home for a lot of people and enlightened the readers without hitting them over the head. The dialogue was superb! The action propelled the book until I couldn't stop listening. I was honestly sad to finish this book - it was so good!
The only critique is that it was a bit graphic but that is a small price to pay for such an engaging read.

Depressing
Revisado: 01-24-25
This book was chosen by my book club. The problem with depicting mental illness and social norms is that you need to balance this with some likeable characters or events. However, this book was a constant downer. The characters all had mental decline of some sort and there was no "break" from the bleakness of it.
Also, the narrative went on and on and on and really didn't add to the storyline in many cases. I agree with many of the other reviews in that the shifting between time and points of view could be confusing.
The narration by Blair Brown sounded like she might have had a cold while recording. The key to a good audio book is the narration and this fell flat to me.

Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Good Historical Fiction

I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to others. I may suggest this for our book club but there is quite a bit of violence for some readers. Although that should be expected given the subject matter. It is definitely worth the credit.

Ok but unnecessarily long
Revisado: 01-02-25
The book started out great. I really enjoyed the characters and their storyline. However, as the book progressed I found it tedious in its descriptions. Also, I really thought the FMC could have been given more choices for her MMC. The author could have done so much more with the characters. It really just became a romance novel and it could have been better than that.

Non-Stop Action!
Revisado: 12-13-24
I really enjoyed "In the Shadow of Kings" and would recommend it to friends. However, the action was non-stop. I like a brief pause at times to catch my breath and get more depth on the characters. Philip Quaintrell put a lot of thought and effort into the fight scenes but I mentally drew back after so long.
The ending was, on one hand predictable and on the other, wild and maybe disappointing. I won't spoil it for others.
Anyway, looking forward to the next book in the series!

This book had it all for me. A female, main character who was smart, had faults but didn't need anyone to save her. The writing was excellent and the plot twists were incredible. I will be recommending this book to my book club friends.
