A rare glimpse of Bangkok

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 08-28-03

I have lived in Bangkok for over 10 years and this is the first book I have read that really has a genuine feel for the City and avoids the usual cliches about girls, drugs and alcohol. It is exceptionally well researched - I could only find one mistake - there are ambulances in Bangkok!!.

More importantly the author seems to accurately capture the motivation and feelings of Thais within his characters. The story itself is highly unusual reflecting in many ways the dichotomies within the City and Thai/Asian way of life.

My only criticism of the book would be the narrator - B.D. Wong. I would be surprised if he had ever set foot in Thailand. His Lao accent seems to emanate from Central Africa!!

Just dont get it

Dont buy this book if you think it will be funny (like I did) - it seems it is supposed to be serious.

And dont buy it if you are really looking for some dating tips - they range from the obvious to the absurd (but still not funny) - like dressing up as a waiter to make a strategic exit from your date in a restaurant.

Which of course leaves the question why buy this book at all and why was it made into an audiobooK?
