This story was full of moral intrigue. It was a narrative of one woman and the complex situations she personally encountered. This followed on from her experiences as a child where she became one of the train children who were given to couples for adoption. She managed complex relationships and there was always the possibility that things would go array. They never did which is not to say that they didn’t falter, but somehow good always seemed to come of the decisions she made. Too good to be true? Only you can judge.

This was a most engaging story. Eleanor saw the world through eyes that told it ‘as it was’ rather than fudged by the expectations of society. Her perspectives became quite engaging although at times you wanted to give her a good shake. The reader did a great job of conveying the various characters.

This is a story about two women who were good friends but whose circumstances almost blew that apart. Both had challenges in their lives, caring for a child whose behaviour was challenging and living with the constant urge to drink. It's a very human story with many sad, happy and frustrating moments. The warmth of friendship shines through despite desperate behaviour.

This story was a remarkable overview of the plight of people during the Genocide. The authors insights to a horrific period give a view of how individuals were caught up in the struggles by conveying not only their experiences but also their thoughts about their dire situation. I have been to Rwanda, heard many versions of the genocide but this story has given me further insights. The key people in the story are described in great depth and with sensitivity. It captures the realities of people's lives based on the authors experiences as a journalist.

This was a fascinating story about an Indian Princess who was also a Suffraget. However I did find the story slow until it reached the section about her political activism - about half way through. The story felt rather pedantic and I would have preferred a more generous interpretation of the historical facts. However, worth reading and a good book to return to as I believe that knowing more about this woman would have made me more attentive to details of her earlier life .

While the book told a wonderful narrative it also raised my awareness of daily life, and the struggles and attitudes of people in a repressed regime. The story was engrossing and passionate. The transition from Kabul to the rather basic life in America seemed almost too easy, with the images of Kabul being much stronger and feeling more realistic.Overall a memorable story with many remarkable twists and turns.

Modern mothers

Revisado: 04-20-15

This was a story based on a group of mothers and the dramas in their lives related to being accepted in their social group. It began by portraying these women as being social butterflies but did develop a more interesting story line as the realities of their lives unfolded. It tackled issues such as violence in the home, bullying and the rather nasty discrimination of community members who condemned a child in a very public way based on the story of one child. The outcome seemed a bit over dramatic and I found it difficult to empathise with these modern mums but some of the characters were memorable. Perhaps a book for those who are mothers.

To my surprise, I found this to be an interesting and absorbing book. I know nothing about the stock exchange and Wall St so at times needed to push through my lack of knowledge and hope it would make sense. It did. There were enough stories about characters in the system - the programmers - to ensure a human dimension. This would be a good book to reread in the near future as I am sure I missed parts of the story because of the specifics in here about the working of the stock exchange. I am now much better informed.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The softer side of Cormoran came through reluctantly.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book, in particular the complexity of the lead character. His ability to mismanage himself, hiss relationships and his disability was frustrating and also endearing, but he was certainly able to think creatively to solve crimes.

Where does The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Near the top.

What did you like best about this story?

It was easy to follow the story of this man who set out on what appeared to be quite a ridiculous walk to prove a point.

If you could take any character from The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I think the women in this story deserved attention - the long suffering, confused wife and the 'friend' who prompted the walk.

Any additional comments?

The various characters that Fry meets on his travels were interesting - at times almost ridiculous especially the large group he attracted. However, the encounters were unexpected and had a certain simplicity and honesty.
