Historia
It's 1942 and the Nazis are racing to be the first to build a weapon unlike any known before. They have the physicists, they have the uranium, and now all their plans depend on amassing a single ingredient: heavy water, which is produced in Norway's Vemork, the lone plant in all the world that makes this rare substance. Under threat of death, Vemork's engineers push production into overdrive. For the Allies, the plant must be destroyed.

Good story but writing and narration didn’t measure up
Revisado: 12-03-24
Story is a good one but its longer than needed with much unnecessary detail. The writing is a flat and the narration monotonous.

Wonderful story. But the constant parade of skin of the teeth escapes was a bit much to believe. Narration is superb.

One of the most remarkable books I’ve ever read. From the choice of words to the ideas. And performances are equally superb. Read Passenger first, accept that ends will remain loose, then read this.

The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Master and Man

Historia
The Death of Ivan Ilyich is a masterpiece of 19th-century fiction. Its conclusion, which triumphantly shows the bond between the dying man and his family, celebrates the enormous gaps that can be closed with love and understanding. Master and Man is one of Tolstoy's best stories. The merchant Brekhunov attempts to save his servant, a task he approaches as if it were a business deal - what benefits the servant will also benefit him. When things don't work out entirely as he plans, the story takes on a larger significance.

Classic story, very poor narration
Revisado: 06-22-24
The Death of Ivan Ilyich is a profound masterpiece.
The narration, though, is literally from another century. Precise but monotonous, with terrible audio quality; sounds like it was recorded in 1940s at latest. Pick the George Guidall or Simon Prebble version instead.

For nearly 20 years, Aaron David Miller has played a central role in U.S. efforts to broker Arab-Israeli peace. His position as an advisor to presidents, secretaries of state, and national security advisors has given him a unique perspective on a problem that American leaders have wrestled with for more than half a century: Why has the world's greatest superpower failed to find a solution for peace in the Middle East?

Although the book ends well, most of the narrative is a series of poorly connected episodes without a sense of a clear destination or arc.

Historia
This magnificent novel by one of America's finest writers is the epic of one man's remarkable journey, set in 19th-century America against the background of a vanishing people and a rich way of life. At the age of 12, under the Wind moon, Will is given a horse, a key, and a map, and sent alone into the Indian Nation to run a trading post as a bound boy. It is during this time that he grows into a man, learning, as he does, of the raw power it takes to create a life, to find a home.

Pluses and minuses
Revisado: 12-04-21
Good story but with some forced twists along the way.
Dialogue often stilted.
Several narrators, some with stiff readings and accents a bit off.
