This is an epic story that quickly engages you emotionally and doesn't let up for 50+ hours. You empathize with and admire Edmond to such an extent he becomes almost an allegory. I can't wait until it's been long enough since listening to this that I get the urge to do so again.

Sometimes the narrator almost has a lateral lisp (slushy lisp) and you wish he'd take a sip of water, but it's never so bad you don't want to listen. Also, there were a few points during the book that the narrator's voice suddenly sounds very different than the preceding chapters. It's not a deterrent, just remarkable.

You really should listen to this book. It's amazing. You'll be looking forward to the next chapter the whole time, and it'll be a looong time! Enjoy!

At first, I thought it would be annoying to listen to a French accent for 18 hours, but it really grew on me and made the story seem more authentic. The narrator did an awesome job and at the very end, when the most important character in the book congratulates the titular character, the voice he uses for the congratulatory words is so sincere and heartfelt, you can't help but smile knowing how proud the fictional character to whom the words were directed would have been. I hit the rewind button many times, because certain sections were so well written and well performed that they deserved to be memorized. I often listen to books to fall asleep, and will have to rewind to a point where I was still awake. With this book, when I would rewind back to the points I had already heard, they had left such an impression on me that I could sometimes recite them word for word, after only having heard them one time while half asleep. This is definitely a good book, and I'll be purchasing another Doyle title to continue with this sense of adventure I've had for the last week.

I could have written this shitty book in three trips to the bathroom. Maybe it would have taken four if I had been eating a high fiber diet immediately prior, but no more.

This narrator talks like the caricature of an English fop. it's hard to understand and annoying and I can't imagine taking to someone so ridiculous in real life.

Typical Michener...

as usual, James Michener writes a fictional story that seems anything but. he gets you involved and emotional about probably a dozen different eras with distinct circumstances, and ties them all together to the present day. in the last chapter, when the main character of that particular segment makes a big decision based on the things she learned that Michener narrates to us, you can't help but feel some of what she's going through. like he does so often, he biographises lives you would love to have lived, and lives you feel pity for hundreds of years later. The first book of his that I read was Poland, and it made me super interested in all things Polish. then, Hawaii. same result. A few books later, I just finished Caribbean, and I feel I have to travel back to the Caribbean and pay attention to the things I've learned about in this book that you don't hear on tours. I would give this book 500 stars if it was possible. enjoy it!
