Historia
Everyone who makes the journey faces an impossible choice. Hundreds of thousands of people who arrive every year at the US-Mexico border travel far from their homes. For years, the majority came from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, but many more have begun their journey much farther away. Some flee persecution, others crime or hunger. They may have already been deported, but the United States remains their only hope for safety and prosperity. They will take their chances.

Mashkawaji (they/them) lies frozen in the ice, remembering the sharpness of unmuted feeling from long ago, finding freedom and solace in isolated suspension. They introduce the seven characters: Akiwenzii, the old man who represents the narrator’s will; Ninaatig, the maple tree who represents their lungs; Mindimooyenh, the old woman, their conscience; Sabe, a gentle giant, their marrow; Adik, the caribou, their nervous system; and Asin and Lucy, the humans who represent their eyes, ears, and brain.

I am a white woman who wants to learn more about the people whose land I live on and First Nations.
This book is a beautiful meditation on interconnection and the narration is like having poetry read to you.
I can read the story now, but I am glad I had it read to me first for proper pronunciation of names and words, and also for the pure enjoyment of it

Historia
In 2014, Shane Bauer was hired for nine dollars an hour to work as an entry-level prison guard at a private prison in Winnfield, Louisiana. An award-winning investigative journalist, he used his real name. Four months later, his employment came to an abrupt end. But he had seen enough and wrote an exposé about his experiences that won a National Magazine Award. In American Prison, Bauer weaves a much deeper reckoning with his experiences together with a thoroughly researched history of for-profit prisons in America from their origins in the decades before the Civil War.

Everyone should read this
Revisado: 04-27-22
This is a page turner of a book with a compelling and difficult lesson. At times difficult to listen to due to the way we treat our fellow humans, but very readable. The reader is perfect for the book.

Narrator is awful
Revisado: 06-12-21
I have read several books recently about Shakespeare and had heard this one is excellent. But after five chapters of the heavy, constant dark urgency in the narrator’s delivery I just couldn’t take it any more and had to stop listening. She made every sentence very dark, very heavy, and didn’t change the tone for any reason. Buy the written book.

Patricia Evans articulates and witnesses the truth of damage caused by a verbally abusive partner. I felt validated and empowered reading this. Also, very sad. Definitely recommend.

In challenging times, why do so many of us turn to Pema Chödrön for guidance? Many say that it’s her honest and caring way of communicating the core teachings of Buddhism - not just conceptually, but directly from her heart to ours. In these inspiring sessions, she teaches us how to give that compassion to the person we neglect most often - ourselves.

Excellent lesson in history with a fantastic story
Revisado: 09-04-19
This exquisite book carries you from before the Russian revolution through the mid century in Moscow. It starts slowly and slow, but by halfway through I could not wait to listen. I was disappointed when it ended, not because of the ending (it was great) but because I was sad it was over. Highly recommend.
