A fantastic conclusion to one of my favorite science fiction stories.
Revisado: 04-13-25
Do you want action? Satisfaction? Do you want to see the bad guys truly cackle, twiddle their fingers, and the good gal try to give them their just desserts? A little (tasteful) romance, all plot lines wrapped up to their conclusion, and the story wrapped up to at least a temporary conclusion that will satisfy?
This is a terrific end to what is hopefully the first arc of the story of Juliet. If it ends up being the final book, it is at a good ending point, but there's room for more, so, who knows what will happen in the future.
Buy this book, then go read Neon Dust from the same author. It has the same vibes.

Twenty-four-year-old Saeris Fane is good at keeping secrets. No one knows about the strange powers she possesses or the fact that she has been picking pockets and stealing from the Undying Queen's reservoirs for as long as she can remember. But a secret is like a knot. Sooner or later, it is bound to come undone. When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently reopens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares… but it turns out they're real.

I hate romance novels and got tricked into buying this
Revisado: 03-12-25
If you like romance novels where the female main character turns into a drooling moron who can't think with anything other than her crotch when an attractive man comes along, maybe you'll like this.
Me, I don't, and I also don't like getting tricked into buying porn. I've got nothing against people who like listening to porn books. It's just not my thing, and if you're going to write a porn book where it's 75% characters thinking about humping each other and only 25% plot, please make that explicit in the descriptions so I can avoid it.

A return to form!
Revisado: 07-28-24
I have been critical of the last couple books of this series, as I felt that the author was using angst by the main character as filler rather than flavor. But I did notice that Mr. Deverell went public with the fact that he was burning out on his three book per year (!!!) release schedule, and was cutting back to only two. This, I believe, is the first book which was written under the new release schedule, and it shows, with much higher quality. More humor, less filling, and even fewer political rants and angst episodes by Jason which people tend to complain about.
Without putting spoilers into the review, this story was written into a corner by the author in his last book, in which our protagonists enter into yet another transformation zone to fight the undead and corrupted Messenger tree, with the Builder cultists, the elemental natives of the zone, and the adventurer teams.
The story is well written, and the ending of part 1 is emotional and quite well done. Part 2 sets up the story for a new arc, and does it quite well. I won't say much more than that, but I laughed, cried, and enjoyed the book more than I thought I would.
I do hope we are done with the transformation zone thing. Hopefully that has been finished. But this is definitely better than book six, the last time they did a zone, and I don't see any reason to think we are going back to that story crutch. I just think the author wrote himself into a corner and did a damn good job writing himself out of it with a satisfactory conclusion.
If you liked books 1-3 of the series, this is more of that vibe in terms of the writing quality. I think it's worth a purchase.
As always, the narration is excellent. I do wish the narrator could do female voices better, but he makes up for it by knocking all the male voices and the general story out of the park with consistent accuracy and emotion where appropriate. Can't wait for the next one, and before this book I was getting a little tired of the series.

A good cultivation story is 25% cultivation/progression and 75% story.
Revisado: 07-01-24
This is the opposite. It is manifestly obvious that the author is using cultivation word salad to inflate chapter and word count when he doesn't know what direction the story should go, likely to keep his patrons on Patreon happy. The first six or so books in this series had excellent pacing. Good action, a good blend between storyline and the cultivation red meat.
This? If less than 16 hours of this book are Zac meditating on something then I'll eat a hat.
I am probably going to give this series one more book. The pacing has gotten worse and worse, more full of filler as time goes on. I'd like to see it improve next book, and if it doesn't, I'm probably out.

An interesting concept ruined by the details.
Revisado: 03-16-24
Okay, so, to sum this up, the MC is a brilliant, elderly CEO isekaid into a game world where he becomes the leader of a town. As a concept, this follows the 4x style of gaming. This book is about the eXplore portion of that strategy game type.
The writing is generally competent. The problem I have is that the details of the economy are just off. For instance, at one point, a major resource production building is constructed for the princely sum of fifty gold. At the same time, farms are producing basic wheat resources for multiple gold per, wheat which can be turned into bread. If you do the math, it turns out that an entire new brewery is worth enough bread to feed several people for a day.
I get that it is a magical fantasy game world. But the key here is that the main character is supposed to be some titan of business. The world economy he is dropped into is so dramarically easy to prosper in, it is like a bad mobile game or peehaps one of the Civ series with the difficulty level lowered to Chieftan (the bare minimum).
I give a lot of slack to authors here, but I was a business major, and if you are going to present a main character to me as a titan of industry, I may not expect you to actually write him like he is a real Andrew Carnegie, but the challenges he is overcoming should require some level of real business acumen. This world is so low challenge, a six year old could master the economy.

Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned.
