Historia
Though Charlotte Sloane's secret identity as the controversial satirical cartoonist A. J. Quill is safe with the Earl of Wrexford, she's ill prepared for the rippling effects sharing the truth about her background has cast over their relationship. She thought a bit of space might improve the situation. But when her cousin is murdered and his twin brother is accused of the gruesome crime, Charlotte immediately turns to Wrexford for help in proving the young man's innocence. The brooding scientist is just as enigmatic and intense as ever, but there is now an unfamiliar tension.

Too much romance
Revisado: 03-05-25
Love mysteries; weird historic setting okay. The nods to the history of science are interesting & entertaining. But the hackneyed romance elements and overwrought dialog not so. I’ll give the rest of this series a miss.

It is delightful to find a book with an unexpected storyline. I've enjoyed all Liane Moriarty's books, but love that she's tried something different this time. It was well worth the time and credit.

Just another wife/girlfriend/lover being tortured/humiliated/murdered by her husband/boyfriend/lover. This trend has gone on too long. The writing could easily have been done by ChatGPT.

Historia
Tragedy at Law follows a rather self-important High Court judge, Mr. Justice Barber, as he moves from town to town presiding over cases in the Southern England circuit. When an anonymous letter arrives for Barber, warning of imminent revenge, he dismisses it as the work of a harmless lunatic. But then a second letter appears, followed by a poisoned box of the judge's favorite chocolates, and he begins to fear for his life. Enter barrister and amateur detective Francis Pettigrew, a man who was once in love with Barber's wife and has never quite succeeded in his profession.

Definitely not Rumpole!
Revisado: 07-10-24
This is a mildly interesting relic from the 1940’s. The many statutory details are somewhat tedious, and the composition long and arduous. Worst of all is the narration. I guess this person was trying to sound authentic by delivering the story as if it were a colorless law tome. They (singular) succeeded.

Millions of Amor Towles fans are in for a treat as he shares some of his shorter fiction: six stories based in New York City and a novella set in Golden Age Hollywood. The New York stories, most of which take place around the year 2000, consider the fateful consequences that can spring from brief encounters and the delicate mechanics of compromise that operate at the heart of modern marriages.

Amor Towles is my favorite author bar none. All his books are fascinating & beautifully written. And what a delightful surprise to realize the second half is a continuation of Rules of Civility! The depiction of Eve’s adventures in LA is sublime.

Historia
Rumors have swirled around Jake Cashen his whole life. Is he crazy like his father? Is it true they booted him out of the F.B.I. right after he cracked a career-making RICO case? Was he dirty? Only Jake knows, and he’s not telling. He came back to his tiny hometown at the foot of Ohio’s Blackhand Hills to serve as a deputy sheriff. He hopes to punch a clock and keep his head down until retirement. It was a solid plan—until someone put a bullet in the head of a revered county judge.

I find the good reviews baffling. Lame story, absurd characters, and all utterly boring. I could not finish despite trying 4 times to get the past first quarter of the book.

Historia
London’s Slough House is where the washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what’s left of their careers. The “Slow Horses,” as they’re called, have all disgraced themselves in some way to get relegated here. Maybe they messed up an op badly, or got in the way of an ambitious colleague. Maybe they just got too dependent on the bottle—not unusual in this line of work. One thing these failed spies have in common, though, is they all want to be back in the action. Now the Slow Horses have a chance at redemption.

Just not for me
Revisado: 05-02-21
I read the other reviews, so I know at least some people really liked this book, and it was free so I listened to the end, hoping it would improve. A tedious undertaking: I found the characters poorly depicted and uncompelling; the plot tortured and silly; and the narrator’s voice gratingly unpleasant. Try a sample before using a credit! Authors aren’t often good readers/actors.
