Hysterical romp with not just a little pathos
Revisado: 02-14-21
If you love James Bond, as I do, and don't take him too seriously - listen to this. The Flemming quotes, the Bond mannerisms and ticks are just right. Excellent voice acting from Chris Ciulla too. Checkout book 1, You Only Live Once, it's free for some members, bought this book and listened all the way through immediately after it. Can't wait for book 3!

Historia
Set in present-day Los Angeles, Junk explores an epic conspiracy, one at work for thousands of years that involves total takeover of the planet Earth by aliens. In the wild, souped-up vision of Les Bohem - the acclaimed, Emmy-winning writer of the Steven Spielberg miniseries, Taken - the world is at the end stage of long-range plot that involves a gigantic genetic-engineering project. The aliens who have invaded us have no planet. No spaceship is coming. Instead, a small advance force comes, breeds, and dies - thus becoming an anomaly in our DNA that can’t be explained.

This book has become an old friend...
Revisado: 01-03-21
Got this title as a freebie and didn't expect much, but since downloading about a couple of years ago, I have re-listened many many times. I just love this story, and John Walter's narration , with his relaxed, cool and almost careless style counterpointing the often gruesome or obscene action is just captivating. Not sure if other reviewer will agree, but for me, this is a little gem.

Historia
Epic prelude to the classic spy trilogy Game, Set and Match that follows the fortunes of a German dynasty during two world wars. Winter takes us into a large and complex family drama, into the lives of two German brothers - both born close upon the turn of the century, both so caught up in the currents of history that their story is one with the story of their country, from the Kaiser's heyday through Hitler's rise and fall.

Historia
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.

Wonderful!

At times heart-breaking, but ultimately life-affirming tale of stubbornness, affection and the innocent wisdom of children and stupidity of adults who have unlearned how to give their love. Listen - weep - smile

Awesome! Completely gripped!
Revisado: 12-31-18
Loved this book. Jayston's reading brought life to every word. Every syllable of pain and terror so real, yet no drama in his voice. He let the power of the words ring in your ears. Must listen.

A lively romp, but a but clunky...
Revisado: 12-17-18
Really enjoyed this story with all the ingredients of a good espionage tale. But, thinly veiled references to current government members, and a professor Baron Cohen were faintly ridiculous. David Rintoul's sonorous reading gave extra gravitas that the narrative really needed. His soft Scottish accent had echoes of the Flemming readings he has done. A pleasure to listen to. I say listen, have fun and enjoy. It's like a movie you are glad you watched, but really don't take away too much and will probably never watch again.

Historia
Frankenstein (1818) is the definitive fable about genetic modification gone haywire which is only too relevant to modern times. Victor Frankenstein decides to build a 'man' from assembled body parts stolen from corpses. What results, of course, is a 'monster', but the mastery of Shelley's storytelling leaves a listener asking themselves what a 'monster' really is - and feeling thoroughly frightened.

Wonderfully tortured classic tale
Revisado: 11-06-18
Love this book. The agony of Frankenstein and his creation were kept taught throughout the narrative and I found myself lost in this gripping tale. The reader, David Rintoul, masterfully adds his vocal skills which make this retelling successful in keeping the listener fully engaged and carried along on the tight narrative journey.
