Historia
When a rifle range accident leaves Dean Howell disfigured and in a vegetative state, his wife Sarah finds her dreary life in Pine Cone, Alabama made even worse. After long and tedious days on the assembly line, she returns home to care for her corpselike husband while enduring her loathsome and hateful mother-in-law, Jo. Jo blames the entire town for her son’s mishap, and when she gives a strange piece of jewelry to the man she believes most responsible, a series of gruesome deaths is set in motion.

Historia
Outside Los Angeles, a driver pulls up to find a young woman sitting on a large black box. She offers him $200,000 cash to transport her and that box across the country, to Washington, DC. But there are rules: He cannot look inside the box. He cannot ask questions. He cannot tell anyone. They must leave immediately. He must leave all trackable devices behind. As these eccentric misfits hit the road, rumors spread on social media that the box is part of a carefully orchestrated terror attack intended to plunge the USA into civil war.

Thought provoking and humorous
Revisado: 10-01-24
This story gave me the same state of mind that anything written by Kurt Vonnegut gave me 55 years ago. Not that Jason Pargin is the reincarnation of Kurt Vonnegut and I haven’t found the word in my brain that describes my aforementioned state of mind only that I was thoroughly entertained and intellectually stimulated at the same time. This story is very relevant and we need more relevant stories.

The best stories pull readers in and keep them turning the pages, eager to discover more—to find the answer to the question: "And then what happened?" The true hallmark of great literature is great imagination, and as Neil Gaiman and Al Sarrantonio prove with this outstanding collection, when it comes to great fiction, all genres are equal.

I am a reader. I read between one and two books a week and have done since high school and since I am 71, that is a fair number of books! I can finally say that I have a
favorite and it is this lovely story. I am touched to my core. I wish I could meet Nobody and Silas and many others-that’s how real these characters were. I can’t sing enough praise for “The Graveyard Book” so I won’t but if you don’t read and/or listen to this one you will be missing a truly good yarn!

Historia
Emerson, Georgia, and Marley have been best friends ever since they met at a weight-loss camp as teens. When Emerson tragically passes away, she leaves one final wish for her best friends: to conquer the fears they still carry as adults. For Marley, it's coming to terms with the survivor's guilt she's carried around since her twin sister's death, which has left her blind to the real chance for romance in her life. For Georgia, it's learning to stop trying to live up to her mother's and brother's ridiculous standards and learning to accept love.

I couldn’t finish this book
Revisado: 10-22-23
I rarely dislike a story as much as I disliked this one. I stuck with it for awhile hoping the characters would start to become less two dimensional but the scene where the rabbit was not considered important enough to be placed in a safe place away from a breed of dog that is enticed to run by chasing rabbits and the way the two women laughed at its death where it was most likely terrified leading up to death was too much. These women , at that moment, went from boring and self obsessed to boring, self obsessed AND heartless. I COULDN’T read further.

Enthralling story
Revisado: 08-30-23
Question: since this ended with an excruciating cliffhanger, how do we find out about the next season? I loved every aspect of this story especially the actors, all of whom were believable. The music in certain parts made me spooked to the bone and added perfectly to the overall weirdness. I loved this story and hope to hear what happens next!

Historia
In this striking, enormously affecting novel, Joyce Carol Oates tells the story of two very different yet intimately linked American families. Luther Dunphy is an ardent Evangelical who envisions himself as acting out God's will when he assassinates an abortion provider in his small Ohio town while Augustus Voorhees, the idealistic doctor who is killed, leaves behind a wife and children scarred and embittered by grief.

Disturbing, timely
Revisado: 06-11-23
This story examines our common human default of believing that God is on OUR side , that WE are the moral ones, the right ones . When rational we’re aware of the many ways to be right and wrong but not when deep in our convictions. Some of us are more guilty of this than others and that is why I , in particular, needed to read this book

A wealthy and notorious clan, the Bellefleurs live in a region not unlike the Adirondacks, in an enormous mansion on the shores of mythic Lake Noir. They own vast lands and profitable businesses, they employ their neighbors, and they influence the government. A prolific and eccentric group, they include several millionaires, a mass murderer, a spiritual seeker who climbs into the mountains looking for God, a wealthy noctambulist who dies of a chicken scratch.

Exquisite.
Revisado: 03-11-23
Oh I enjoyed every aspect of this complex story. The narrator read this beautiful story in a way I imagine Joyce Carol Oates would read it herself. I was so immersed that I could completely imagine myself there. I especially love the mysterious character Hallalel(sp?) , a cat (and so much more than a cat, if that’s even possible).

Historia
Night. Sleep. Death. The Stars. is a gripping examination of contemporary America through the prism of a family tragedy: When a powerful parent dies, each of his adult children reacts in startling and unexpected ways, and his grieving widow in the most surprising way of all. Stark and penetrating, Joyce Carol Oates’s latest novel is a vivid exploration of race, psychological trauma, class warfare, grief, and eventual healing, as well as an intimate family novel in the tradition of the author’s best-selling We Were the Mulvaneys.

An exquisite story read beautifully
Revisado: 01-19-23
I love Joyce Carol Oates and have enjoyed every single story through several decades. There is no one, in my opinion, who understands how people “work” so deeply. And this was my favorite so far.The performance was perfect, phenomenal, just catching the exact right tone. When a reader is able to help one believe that there are many people!
Thank you so much

Historia
There is no easy path for a woman aspiring to power. A concubine at the palace learns quickly that there are many ways to capture the emperor's attention. Many paint their faces white and style their hair attractively, hoping to lure in the One Above All with their beauty. Some present him with fantastic gifts, such as jade pendants and scrolls of calligraphy, while others rely on their knowledge of seduction to draw his interest. But young Mei knows nothing of these womanly arts, yet she will give the emperor a gift he can never forget.

Disappointed
Revisado: 01-06-23
I made the mistake of listening to several Pearl Buck novels before this one. This read like a harlequin novel. Silly phrases like “ no way !” As if that phrase would be spoken in the fourteenth century. Mispronounced words, too. I can’t recommend the Moon in the Palace to anyone with a reading level above third grade. Or who would like to get a sense of Ancient China.
