Historia
To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

It is the spring of 1976 and Eilis is now forty with two teenage children. Though her ties to Ireland remain stronger than those that hold her to her new land and home, she has not returned in decades.

Splendid! But…
Revisado: 05-22-24
The story is riveting, the prose is majestic, Jessie Buckley’s reading is stellar…BUT the very second the last sentence is read, the listener is launched — no, CATAPULTED— into an interview with Buckley about what she thinks about the book and her feelings about reading it. Jeez, give a listener a moment to take in the ending of the tale, the beauty of the closing lines, the nuance of the reader’s performance! I tried to go back and have that experience over the last lines of the book, but my finger isn’t fast enough to press pause before the cloying voice of the interviewer comes in to introduce Jessie Buckley and they start yammering about her performance of the book. Quite jarring after such a delicate, sad story. Simon & Schuster Audio, give us a break (literally!) next time!

Historia
“Can I kiss you?” It was two months before the world premiere of Juno, and Elliot Page was in his first ever queer bar. The hot summer air hung heavy around him as he looked at her. And then it happened. In front of everyone. A previously unfathomable experience. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer person, as a trans person. Getting closer to his desires, his dreams, himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long. But for Elliot, two steps forward had always come with one step back.

Helped Me Begin to Understand
Revisado: 07-01-23
I’m a straight senior citizen and identify as liberal and a Queer ally, but honestly, I have struggled with understanding the trans experience. I’m trying to educate myself, and this book was a good start for someone like me. Page generously and articulately shares his inner life and what it has been like for him as a person and an artist who never felt comfortable identifying with the gender stated in his birth certificate. He tells his story simply, modestly and honestly. I was riveted. And though he does not ask us to cheer or applaud, the reader cannot help but admire his triumph over years of self doubt and discomfort. I wish him the best as his story unfolds, and thank him for sharing his story.

Honest & Insightful
Revisado: 02-14-23
Feels like a tale told on a girls’ trip by your best friend who has made peace with her past and has learned to love her younger self. Simpson is becoming a wise woman to reckon with. I only hope that eventually her speaking manner catches up with the confidence and maturity her fine writing evinces.

Inside Baseball for TV Nerds
Revisado: 01-22-23
Lots of interesting backstory on the last half century of the tv sitcom, but it’s not juicy or gossipy or overly personal. Burrows is a pro, and delivers this like a seminar to directing students.

Historia
It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Historia
Was What's My Line TV star, media icon, and crack investigative reporter and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen murdered for writing a tell-all book about the JFK assassination? If so, is the main suspect in her death still at large? These questions and more are answered in former CNN, ESPN, and USA Today legal analyst Mark Shaw's 25th book, The Reporter Who Knew Too Much.

Long Overdue Update on Disconcerting Case
Revisado: 09-29-22
Mark Shaw provides thorough research and new information, and his conclusions are credible. While he doesn’t solve the case, he dispels the official story convincingly and puts Kilgallen’s accomplishments in historical context. If the mystery of Dorothy Kilgallen’s death interests you, or if the influence of organized crime in 1960s New York politics & law enforcement dies, this book is a must. Complaint about the reader: she has a habit of lowering her voice and talking like a gangster any time she quotes a male speaker. Although I found it annoying, I tolerated it until the end when she gave the same dropped-octave-side-of-the-mouth delivery to a quote from Thomas Merton. I mean, COME ON!

Historia
The 1990s was a decade of profound change on Broadway. At the dawn of the '90s, the British invasion of Broadway was in full swing, as musical spectacles like Les Miserables, Cats, and The Phantom of the Opera dominated the box office. But Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard soon spelled the end of this era and ushered in a new wave of American musicals, beginning with the ascendance of an unlikely show by a struggling writer who reimagined Puccini’s opera La Bohème as the smash Broadway show Rent

Why Didn’t Michael Riedel Read This Himself?
Revisado: 01-17-22
Because his scintillating reporting is undermined by Shaun Taylor-Corbett’s constant mispronunciations of proper names and titles that fall on a savvy reader’s ear like an aria performed by Florence Foster Jenkins. Very distracting. Very good, dishy book. The performance is actually pretty good when the reader isn’t putting the em-PHA-sis on the wrong syl-LA-ble or just plain bungling a name or title. So, listener beware. BUT WHY DIDN’T THE AUTHOR JUST READ IT HIMSELF?

Revisado: 11-17-21
Over an hour in, and this guy is still telling me what I will learn from this book. Haven’t learned anything new so far. I was expecting a vocal coach’s insight into how women can assert themselves through more robust vocal production. So far it’s a lot of repetitive mumbo-jumbo. Feels like the author is selling personal empowerment workshops and is cautiously withholding content till he can get more money from the reader. I hope I’m wrong. But don’t know if I have the patience to hang in and find out.
