Historia
Beloved British journalist Daniel Finkelstein tells the extraordinary story of the years before his mother met his father—years of war and trials they barely survived. Daniel Finkelstein's grandfather was a German Jewish intellectual leader who tolled an early warning of the impending Holocaust and became an archivist of Nazi crimes. He relocated his family to safety in Amsterdam, where they knew Anne Frank. But in those years safety was an illusion: Anne Frank famously went into hiding and Daniel's mother, Mirjam, also still a child, was sent to Bergen-Belsen with her mother and sisters.

A Perspective on the Atrocities being WWII that Ties it All Together
Revisado: 12-24-24
I have to give this my personal "Book of the Year Award." Most holocaust stories are told from a very personal perspective - this story weaves in the greater politics and powers behind WWII ( in Germany, Russia, and the United States states) that directly effected the author's family. The crimes committed by the Soviet Union against the Poles are nearly as heinous as those committed by the nazis. Truly an insightful and unique perspective on the war and its victims. I feel that had I read this in (my American) high school, I would have developed an earlier interest in and quickly gained a broader understanding of the war years in Europe.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Based on this account, flying to the moon was safer than getting on a ship in the 18th century! What these travelers endured is unbelievable, and how they survived the voyages, battles, shipwrecks, starvation, and murderous intents while marooned is astounding. The narration is entertaining and keeps you spellbound. A must-listen for fans of non-fiction.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Unbelievable! Inspiring.
Revisado: 11-24-22
The author tells this story so masterfully and with such seamless and perfect detail. The reading by the actor Edward Hermann was one of the best I've heard. And this journey of perseverance and redemption touches the heart profoundly. The author offers facts and statistics to put the personal experience of the characters in perspective. These wars and their aftermath, and the men and women who fought and endured the wars' hardships, shaped our world today. We have forgotten the lessons of WWII. This story helps to remind us of them.

They seek to apply biblical standards to difficult debates about our current political situation. Don't listen to this audiobook to find support for your views. Perspectives needed even more in 2021
Revisado: 10-16-21
I listen to some of these twice, and will likely open the book again when I need a dose of calm, Christ-based perspective. Excellent scriptural foundation in nearly every essay. These rational, clear- thinking, voices are needed even more in the dangerous political divide we face in 2021.

Historia
Are leaders born or made? Where does ambition come from? How does adversity affect the growth of leadership? Does the man make the times or do the times make the man? In Leadership, Goodwin draws upon four of the presidents she has studied most closely - Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson (in civil rights) - to show how they first recognized leadership qualities within themselves, and were recognized by others as leaders.

Surprising Traits of Presidential Leadership
Revisado: 07-19-20
These 4 men from different times, seemingly opposites of each other, surprisingly had in common strong empathy toward others, and, despite their larger than life personas, humility. The one experience they all shared, which these stories draw to parallel how they handled themselves when faced to lead in troubled times, is their experience in facing severe adversity in their personal lives. These stories are incredibly inspiring. I found myself cheering for their tremendous, life-changing, national accomplishments, and tearing up at their sacrifices and end-of-life stories. The author Has first hand knowledge of LBJ, as she interned for him and later served as a personal memoir writer immediately after his presidency. i would Recommend this book to anyone in leadership or who wants to leader, anyone in government, and anyone who wants to make informed remarks about the presidency of the United States. And if you're the actual President of the United States it wouldn't hurt to read this book either.

Historia
McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

Remarkable, inspiring, touching
Revisado: 07-07-20
Understanding that McCullough extracted all of these fascinating and vivid details from the Prolific correspondence of the day, gives the story its veracity and makes the events even more remarkable. John Adams' unwaivering equanimity and unremitting actions for liberty are an inspiration. The times were difficult in every aspect, compared to today. The story intertwines Adams' career and personal life and i was touched by his interactions with his family, friends and colleagues through his national and international adventures. I believe i fell in love with Abigail through her correspondence. John and Abigail were a uniquely strong couple and a role model for any marriage where one spouse's job is all consuming. According to this account, Adam's was the architects of our federal government and its checks and balances.

Revisado: 06-07-20
Matis' integrity is unquestionable, his commitment to the United States and those volunteer men and women who put their lives on the line for their country unwavering, his openness to learn from history and others humbling, and his efforts to build relationships with allies all over the world inspiring. If you're looking to understand why General Matis resigned as Secretary of Defense, it's very clear once you read the experience that this man has not only on the battle field, but in the field of international diplomacy as well. You won't get any inside dirt, but his resignation letter is included in the list chapter. The epilogue also provides more on his personal feelings about the current political and social environment. Matis is remarkably well-read and provides a recommended reading list of his own.

Historia
In 10 lectures, award-winning historian Patrick N. Allitt transports listeners to England in the 1840s and 1850s. During those two decades, Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, became one of the most influential people in the country and remains a figure of fascination even today. In fact, the British royal family as we know it wouldn't exist without the private and public actions of this detached, impartial, and upright political figure.

Historia
The award-winning author of The Battle of Bretton Woods reveals the gripping history behind the Marshall Plan—told with verve, insight, and resonance for today.
In the wake of World War II, with Britain’s empire collapsing and Stalin's on the rise, US officials under new secretary of state George C. Marshall set out to reconstruct western Europe as a bulwark against communist authoritarianism. Their massive, costly, and ambitious undertaking would confront Europeans and Americans alike with a vision at odds with their history and self-conceptions. In the process, they would drive the creation of NATO, the European Union, and a Western identity that continues to shape world events.
Focusing on the critical years 1947 to 1949, Benn Steil’s thrilling account brings to life the seminal episodes marking the collapse of postwar US-Soviet relations—the Prague coup, the Berlin blockade, and the division of Germany. In each case, we see and understand like never before Stalin’s determination to crush the Marshall Plan and undermine American power in Europe.
Given current echoes of the Cold War, as Putin’s Russia rattles the world order, the tenuous balance of power and uncertain order of the late 1940s is as relevant as ever. The Marshall Plan provides critical context into understanding today’s international landscape. Bringing to bear fascinating new material from American, Russian, German, and other European archives, Steil’s account will forever change how we see the Marshall Plan and the birth of the Cold War. A polished and masterly work of historical narrative, this is an instant classic of Cold War literature.

Marshall Plan made America most powerful nation
Revisado: 04-19-20
Written with incredible insight. The stories take you behind the scenes into the conversations and motives of the players, during a period which shaped the western world as anyone alive knows it. The personalities are both larger than life and very human. The narration is read with understanding and intelligence. Undoubtedly, (and perhaps unwittingly,) the Marshall Plan made America most powerful nation in the world.
