Historia
The seven years between the birth of Etgar Keret’s son and the death of his father were good years, though still full of reasons to worry. Lev is born in the midst of a terrorist attack. Etgar’s father gets cancer. The threat of constant war looms over their home and permeates daily life. What emerges from this dark reality is a series of sublimely absurd ruminations on everything from Etgar’s three-year-old son’s impending military service to the terrorist mind-set behind Angry Birds.

Beautiful writing and beautiful reading. I usually don’t like short stories but I loved this writing. I wasn’t left feeling like any story wasn’t finished. They were complete and great.

Historia
As a panicked world goes into lockdown, Lucy Barton is uprooted from her life in Manhattan and bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. For the next several months, it’s just Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a little house nestled against the moody, swirling sea. Rich with empathy and emotion, Lucy by the Sea vividly captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities that those long, quiet days can inspire.

Reader ruined it.
Revisado: 02-08-23
The reader of this story used a tone of voice that made Lucy seem out of touch with everything. She seemed stupid. I couldn’t believe that Lucy was an accomplished writer because she seemed borderline demented. So many times Lucy says “I can’t believe it, I can’t believe it.” I imagined, reading the words myself with a different tone of voice, and it could’ve been so different with a different tone of voice interpretation. The reader made Lucy seem unlikable because she was so dumb. Who chose this reader? Does the author get a say in who reads it? My sister read this book and she loved it and suggested it to me so I listen to it and I hated it. I discussed it with her and then I started listening with a different tone of voice in my head, and I realized it was the reader that ruined the book. Very awful! I just finished the four winds by Kristin Hannah, and the reader of that book was fantastic! The reader really makes a difference. I’m curious to see if anyone else had an issue with this reader.

Super interesting!
Revisado: 01-29-23
I found the descriptions of how these very privileged people lived during the turn of the century fascinating. Anderson Cooper reads it very well and it’s touching to hear him talk about his mom and her challenges. It’s always interesting to hear when people have evolved and can look back with some compassion for their imperfect parents and it’s got the bonus of being historically very interesting. Very good read!

But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

Best book in years.
Revisado: 01-19-23
I loved this! The story grabbed me pretty early on because it was about the relationships we have with ourselves and with our family and then our chosen family. It’s a sweeping American history of survival and determination, it’s about evolving and determination. It has smaller detailed stories that all weave into a larger story. I loved this book! The reader was fantastic! I’ll look now for other books she has read. I loved her voice, her timing and her tone. She added so much to the story. Loved her!!

I wanted to like it.
Revisado: 12-15-22
I listened to the whole book hoping that I would fall in love with the characters the way I have with all of his other books. Long boring passages. He needed an editor that wasn’t afraid of being an editor to John Irving. My sister read it too and she didn’t like it either. She also loves Irving. Sigh.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Great book! Especially for anyone with mentally ill mom
Revisado: 08-22-22
My mom was mentally ill too and there is shame pushed at people with bad parents which causes such secrecy. I bought the book because of the title because I waited for my mom to die, so I could feel free. It’s a taboo subject if you are estranged from a mother. I appreciate her bravery in talking so openly about her life. I hid my history for decades because if I would ever mention any difficulty with that relationship there would be a barrage of sympathy for the idea of a mother. I’m so glad to see details of just how awful a parent can be. The author is starting a conversation that will help younger people with damaged parents. Not all mothers are worthy of respect and forgiveness. Aside from the helpfulness of this book, it’s well written and a very compelling read. I hope she keeps writing because I think she found her purpose. Great job!

Honest and real
Revisado: 06-10-22
I loved the truth of this woman. This character is so hard working but pretty unloving towards herself. She’s a raw and unvarnished struggling human. It’s mostly a story that follows her inner dialog and about how a life can go sideways because of an unplanned pregnancy and a religious cage. It doesn’t make such a clear connection but it’s clear enough. You can’t help but wonder when and why she got so derailed and what she could have been if her pregnancy had not happened. She works like a super successful person but her life was crippled so she’s stuck. I’m looking forward to the authors next novel!

Historia
Greenville County, South Carolina, is a wild, lush place that is home to the Boatwright family - a tight-knit clan of rough-hewn, hard- drinking men who shoot up each other's trucks, and indomitable women who get married young and age too quickly. At the heart of this story is Ruth Anne Boatwright, known simply as Bone, a bastard child who observes the world around her with a mercilessly keen perspective.

Loved the novel
Revisado: 12-09-20
This was one of my favorite books when it came out so many years ago. I think this narrator acted it out more than would have been my preference. Somehow it diminished the story for me. I felt liked I had watched a movie rather than listened to book. I would have preferred less interpretation. The book is so good, so delicately told, it allowed me to feel her story more when reading it. The reader was just too much an actress for my taste. Buy the book!

Wonderful information!
Revisado: 05-07-20
I read “Attached” first and I found this a really good source of information too. I think she has a really good way of paying information out and she has a very kind way of describing the less ideal attachment styles. I will recommend this to my friends who are open to evolving and want to learn more about relationships. Really wonderful book!!!
I wish the author had read at a slightly slower pace so that I didn’t feel as rushed to process. I kept turning it off to think-sometimes even between sentences. I also tried lowering the speed to 3/4 but that was too slow to not be irritating. Her voice is likable and you can feel her wanting to be helpful which is really great. Maybe having both the hard copy and the audible would be best. I’m really happy I read/listened to this.
