So Good

This was so good that I'm going to have to buy a copy of the book, just to see what parts were written, and what parts were an ad lib by Kevin Hart. His story was funny and compelling, and very worth the listen.

I was engaged the entire time. And the "petting zoo" story... I was at work trying not to lose it! The Obama story is so inspiring, and I was able to see so much of my story in her words. I guess that's the bigger point, isn't it?

Historia
Emmy Award-winning news anchor and New York Times best-selling author Chris Hayes argues that there are really two Americas: a Colony and a Nation. America likes to tell itself that it inhabits a postracial world, but nearly every empirical measure - wealth, unemployment, incarceration, school segregation - reveals that racial inequality hasn't improved since 1968.

So much to this book!
Revisado: 04-18-17
First of all, I really enjoyed listening to the author tell this story. He has such professional and personal ownership of the story and it resonates throughout. Which is good, because I know I'm going to have to re-listen to it, and possibly go buy a copy. There is so much to this story, and I thought I kind of understood the nuances of it before reading this. Not close. Every one needs to read this. we might understand each other so much better if we did.

Audie Award, Humor, 2016. In Furiously Happy, number-one New York Times best-selling author Jenny Lawson explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea. But terrible ideas are what Jenny does best.

Yes! Someone gets me!
Revisado: 06-04-15
Would you listen to Who's Afraid of Post-Blackness again? Why?
Yes, I'm sure I will. It was alot of information, and I'm sure I didn't catch everything the way I wanted to. It's a good read, so listening again will be easy.
What other book might you compare Who's Afraid of Post-Blackness to and why?
I can't because this is the first book I've read that actually discusses post-blackness in this way.
What does Touré bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
How he tells a story really makes it worth the listen.
If you could give Who's Afraid of Post-Blackness a new subtitle, what would it be?
"Everything you wanted to know about being black in America, but were afraid to ask" or "Wait, racism isn't over yet?"
Any additional comments?
This is the first book I've read that is willing to break down both sides of the racism experience, particularly from both outside and inside the race, in a way that I could only scream, "Yes, Yes, that is so true!" as I listened to it.

Historia
In this groundbreaking book, Melissa V. Harris-Perry uses multiple methods of inquiry, including literary analysis, political theory, focus groups, surveys, and experimental research, to understand more deeply black women's political and emotional responses to pervasive negative race and gender images. Not a traditional political science work concerned with office-seeking, voting, or ideology, Sister Citizen is an examination of how African American women understand themselves as citizens and what they expect from political organizing.

Wow
Revisado: 05-31-15
I was floored by this writing. This book answered so many questions for me. More importantly, as an African American woman of possible mixed heritage, who has spent much of her life questioning whether she was black enough, I now see how most of my experience is rooted in the challenges that being African American entail.

Historia
Divorce Court star Judge Lynn Toler shares her mother's wisdom for learning to conquer anger and become immune to insult. Toler credits her mother's "rules" for life - a life that saw her grow up the daughter of a poor teen mother and endure a husband who suffered mental illness and alcoholism - with providing the grounding for her own success and happiness. Toler shows how the mindset of "a black woman who knew how to make things work" taught her the power of knowing how to manage one's emotional business - lessons that this book offers in wrenching stories....

Loved it...just one little thing
Revisado: 05-26-15
I loved the story Judge Lynn shares in her book. After hearing so many audiobooks, I wish the production could have been less rushed. Sometimes you needed to take a breath after her wisdom before jumping right into the next thing. Again not a critique on Judge Lynn at all. I'm going to listen again and write the rules out (or just buy a copy of the book).
