Perfect narration, timelessly classic writing
Revisado: 01-21-25
Hope Davis's beautifully expressive narration sympathetically captures the essence and depth of each character, voicing the dialogue so naturally that I often forgot she is only one actor. Her voice is pleasant, and her interpretation is very well done. I will remember to look for her other work in voice and on screen. Rare and wonderful, and up to the task of narrating this impressive modern masterpiece.
Ann Patchett's characters, story, setting, and many closely researched details would be highly entertaining even without her expert writing. State of Wonder is a journey of discovery, as charming, heartwarming, and heartbreaking as life. Compelling and worthwhile.

Historia
Narcissism is an overwhelming and confusing topic. By nature, it's designed to keep you trapped in shame-based vertigo. It doesn’t just go away because you know it exists. Narcissism creates a set of beliefs, behaviors, and paradigms in its target which must be changed from the inside. Using an inside-out approach, How to Kill a Narcissist presents seven practices for recovery and healing, each designed to instill you with independence, strength, emotional resilience, and awareness, while allowing you to cultivate balanced, loving relationships and pursue a life of passion.

Fauci, a courageous, compassionate leader
Revisado: 10-23-20
This nicely balanced account of Dr Fauci's work in public health reveals the person, himself, who struggled to reorganize bureaucratic medical systems in order to bring options and Hope to the lives of those who were suffering with HIV. His years of work in research and epidemiology, and then viruses in particular, suit him especially well to understand and provide effective leadership and expertise in response to the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Real. Compelling. Insightful. A call to action
Revisado: 08-08-20
A quintessentially American story. An innocent young man dies, victim of a racist infrastructure. As the community reacts and responds, they struggle with grief, anger, denial, and feelings of hopelessness. They debate whether to acknowledge the truth or escape involvement.
This sweetly genuine performance captures the voices of the characters in Angie Thomas' timely narrative. Told through first-person reporting and dialogue, the story explores the challenges of every-day systemic racism, its consequences, and possible solutions.
Thomas's characterizations are sympathetic, multi-dimensional, familiar, and beloved personalities. Readers will recognize themselves, their friends and family, neighbors, and others. Young people, innocent children, wise parents, and flawed characters are understood as individuals building their dreams, responding and growing, within the context of systemic challenges in their community, a neighborhood that resembles many urban / suburban communities across America.
Despite the honest discussion of racism, violence, and systematic oppression, this story is sweet, compelling, and ultimately hopeful. Among tne ideas presented is that voices matter, that communicating information honestly and with integrity, however difficult the reality, can motivate change toward safety, justice, and healthier opportunities for everyone.
