I love Matthew McConaghey. I got the book before I knew he was a motivational speaker and after starting this book I must wonder, if it is in spite of it or because of it. An accomplished actor trained in speaking, his apparently natural manner of speaking gets really difficult to understand at times. His pace is fast, he spurts, it is unpleasant to listen to. I have not gotten past the first chapter and would have returned the title just beacuse of it being basically unintelligible. I will try to listen to it again at a lower speed, some day, when I can find the motivation to pick it up again...

There is a little bit of every columnn in this book. Is it a thriller? is it a ghost story? Is it a teen romance? Who is the killer or is nobody or is everybody? It wasn't bad enough to not finish it (or maybe I was just too bored), but hey, when you have two hours of book left when the story is finished it sounds like someone is pitching a project idea they're not too sure about themselves. If you have the choice, listen to another book. This isn't worth it.

Buy this, if you still think purple is a fruit.

I hate writing reviews. I wish I could rather manage writing a book. Seriously, I applaud anyone being able to to do that. Mind you, it took me 1,5 years to get my stupid bachelor thesis done! HOWEVER (you knew it was coming).

This book is nothing but a recap of what you learned in school as well all the health guides ever written about those same topics as well. I strongly recommend this book, of course, if you do not know

- smoking is bad for you, stop it
- drinking excess alcohol is bad for you
- a sedentary lifestyle is bad for you
- processed food is bad for you
- being fat is bad for you, stop it
- fruit and veg are good for you

The only new thing I learned was that microwaving your food regularly gives you brain damage (oh and this is actually MAJOR misinformation stating brain damage being caused by microwaved food as opposed to potential harms of being exposed to direct mw radiation!!!).

This book has a lot of snippets about individual substances and molecules but no bigger picture is formed from them. The basic guidelines are: stop smoking (maybe not as bad as microwaved food, though), eat or drink nothing in excess, pile up the plants on your plate, stop being fat, go take a walk, sleep and don't stress. You knew this, of course. I wish there had been a stronger emphasis on inflammation mechanics and a little more depth to what, say, the bloody blueberries actually do or why I should eat orange fruit and veg but not citrus fruit and if Omega 6 will kill me slowly, really.

On the plus side, there was a sober approach to all of this, e.g. no hype or sermoning. Yay! (This could also be due to the narrator being monotonous enough to be mistaken for a bot, even though his voice is nice.)

I bought this book because it was recommended by a podcaster. (Mind you, after about a year of listening I have come to realise stronger every day, that my views on life, food and eating are healthy and hers are strongly somethingrexic so I after listening to this I have now parted ways with her. Trust your intuition.)

I gave the author the benefit of the doubt after my initial cringe about the "terminology" he chooses to use, as he said in the book I would. However, at about 1,5 h in I just couldn't take it anymore. My pet peeve was the juvenile argumentation, which didn't sound healthy at all, combined with the nervous narration. It made the whole thing sound like a former drinker two weeks into his sobriety.

The author makes some very good points in my opinion, etc. that everyone should choose a food programme that suits them best, one slip up is not the end etc., but this gets lost in the twitchiness. Also, I personally am over this phase of my eating problems and have already bought this part, so even after finding the info I realised it was irrelevant.

An extra annoyance was the jump between older and newer recorded bits, which made parts of the narration sound like the disclaimers in the tv ads the Simpsons watch.

If you are at the start of your journey to peace with your eating and are easily inspired by MLM speeches, this is the book for you.

The book is written and narrated in a nice flow, and the ideas presented are inspiring. I took up this book because I am a casual drinker - nothing like the binging and partying all night. I still feel my a glass of wine before bedtime may actually be a problem with regards to sleep etc. I feel it is hard to identify with a totally different life style than mine. What bugs me also is the idea that, again, a "life-changing change-of-life" book presents your options as being one of two extremes. I don't want to replace my glass of wine with another, say exercise, addiction. Maybe there should be a rule that self-help should not be written before the lifestyle change has been in place for over 25 years. A good and inspiring book, but for another audience than me.

This is for you, who wants a personal reference for fasting and enjoy listening to people's success stories. However, if you have read The Obesity Code , this book will have practically no new information for you. There is nothing wrong with it, the narration is great and the information valid, it's just that it is basically a truncated version of The Obesity Code with inserts of Eve Meyer's experience with fasting. Not what I thought I would get.

Don't get me wrong - I love the more sciency self-help books and especially when it comes to nutrition, there are far too many feel-good-bibles about and not enough course books, so to say. This particular book will very likely end up in my physical book shelf, but for an audio book, it is way too theoretical. You would need to take notes at the same time. In addition to that, the narrator - although she has a pleasant voice and masters pronouncing most termini flawlessly, just "produces" the text. I feel this would have benefited from a teacher reading it, as the text is very much like a lecture. I didn't get past 30 minutes, but I hope to find a time and space where I can use this together with the physical book.

Couldn't go past 3 minutes or so. The narrator has chosen such a peculiar narration character I am unable to focus on the content. Pity - this is a book on my must reads.

If you are recovering from an eating disorder or binge dieting, I strongly recommend to skip this book. The material as such is very interesting, but the approach to weight and health is a bit unmerciful. I feel bad about the author who refers in a rather negative way to herself as having been "fat" at a BMI of 29,1 (yes, I had to calculate it to support my initial reaction). The hormones are not the prime concern, the weight is. To someone in recovery this is toxic. To someone still deep in body dysmorphia this is toxic. To someone obese this is toxic. Let's not weight shame, let's get healthy all the way!
