Historia
When she fell asleep, the world was doomed. When she awoke, it was dead. In the wake of a fever that decimated the earth's population - killing women and children and making childbirth deadly for the mother and infant - the midwife must pick her way through the bones of the world she once knew to find her place in this dangerous new one. Gone are the pillars of civilization. All that remains is power - and the strong who possess it.

Vega Jones escapes an abusive relationship with nothing but her two-month-old baby and the van she grew up in. Her destination is a small Ohio town her late vagabond mother left years ago. It’s one full of nobodies, her mother warned. That makes it the ideal refuge for Vega to lie low, feel safe, and maybe learn more about a past her mother never spoke of.

Good read

Really enjoyed the book. Narrarators attempt at dialect..CRINGE! Not all of the people from the town needed to sound like inbred, cedar hacking, dim witted rednecks! Voice is nice enough, just 👎 NO to the accents/dialect.

good but
Revisado: 08-28-23
The book itself was good, I like historical facts intertwined. The performance, however, was lacking. Biggest complaint, don't try to do the accents. It just threw me off because they didn't sound realistic, and the voices/ dialect wasn't consistent. Otherwise, I liked it ;)

Absolutely love this series. I was hooked after the first one, then the second, and now the third. I feel like I was educated, entranced, and enraged, all in the same book. Fantastic work! keep them coming!

Loved!
Revisado: 09-18-21
I absolutely loved this story! I needed to know the plight of Isabella and Mia so badly, I even listened to the audiobook at work every chance I got. The only negative words I have are not about the book at all, but to the audiobook readers, and those words are...If you are not fluent in the proper pronunciation/dialect of foreign languages and tongues, please just read it normally, without attempting the accents. It would have made the experience of the book a lot better. There were times I wasn't sure if the character being read was supposed to be German, Mexican, Asian, or even Irish or Scottish. Just my 2 cents. Great read otherwise!

Not my favorite performance
Revisado: 08-02-21
The story line was ok, content a little too much back and forth, but mostly, (OMG) the person reading, her pronunciation of some words, over and over again, this alone made me fast forward the last 20 chapters. I just couldn't take it any longer. Sad, because if not for the super annoying performance, I may have given a better review.

Good story line but the attempted accents made the book really hard to listen to. Personally, I'd prefer to use my imagination rather than be disturbed by the poor attempt at accents. Otherwise, not terrible.
