A seat grabber from the start
Revisado: 08-23-24
The use of various narrators really brought the characters to life, allowing the story to unfold in a way that was easy to visualize as I listened.

Wrong Narrator
Revisado: 07-23-24
In my admiration for Nia Long's work, I anticipated enjoying her portrayal as the narrator in this piece. However, I found her rendition to be disconcerting. I concur with other critics' observations that the emphasis in her delivery seemed misplaced, and her performance lacked the essence of the characters. Consequently, I found it challenging to progress beyond the third chapter. If feasible, I would opt to return this Audible book.

Historia
Touré Wallace and Niomi Spencer were close friends at Finley College, the prestigious HBCU they attended. The attraction that simmered between them every semester was a question they never got to ask or answer before soaring ambitions launched them to opposite corners of the world. Both chased their dreams of grit and glamor as high-profile journalists. They got it all...except a shot at being more than friends. Years later, Touré is an award-winning investigative journalist and Niomi is America's most popular morning-show host, but they both feel like something’s missing.

Each of the narrators was able to convey the story as written by the author. I could listen to this story again and again. This book is a definite must-read.

Dry Narration

While I'm sure the book is a good one, I couldn't continue past chapter 2 because of the narration. The narrators voice was monotone and grating.

Historia
Something big is coming...big enough to destroy the entire solar system...and it's heading straight for Earth. That's what Dr. Ben Rollins, head of Harvard's exoplanet research team, is told by NASA after being dragged out of bed in the middle of the night. His first instinct is to call his daughter and wife, who are vacationing in Italy: Something is coming, he tells them, a hundred times the mass of our sun. We can't see it, we don't know what it is, but it's there.

Save your credit
Revisado: 02-19-21
I wouldn't fall asleep to this book as that's how horrible it is. The storyline is not believable. The Narrator would be best suited reading erotica books as she sounds like sex kitten reading this book, which doesn't help the subpar story line at all. There is no voice difference between the characters. The author went to great lengths in her description of materialistic items.

Fire the Narrator
Revisado: 09-16-20
My first impression of the Narrator was at times, she sounded too upbeat when the storyline called for anger. I could barely discern from one character to the next as her tone of voice rarely changed andthe main character was naive and simple at best. The standout character is Patrice as she was the most realistic. The story line read more like a soap opera than anything. Although, I'm a big fan of Lawson, this by far is one of her weakest books. GLAD I DIDN'T PAY FOR IT.

Historia
An extraordinary debut novel, Freshwater explores the surreal experience of having a fractured self. It centers around a young Nigerian woman, Ada, who develops separate selves within her as a result of being born "with one foot on the other side". Unsettling, heart-wrenching, dark, and powerful, Freshwater is a sharp evocation of a rare way of experiencing the world, one that illuminates how we all construct our identities. Ada begins her life in the south of Nigeria as a troubled baby and a source of deep concern to her family.

Interesting Story
Revisado: 02-27-20
This is an excellent story about mental illness, rape, suicide, promiscuity, and gender identity. I listened to this book via Audible and was glad that I chose that medium. If I had chosen to read the book, I would have stopped in the second chapter. The narrator's voice never changed when she spoke about the characters and as a result, I had to repeat certain passages. This book is slow yet powerful and definitely an excellent choice for a book club discussion.

Historia
For a runaway slave in the 1840s South, life on the run can be just as dangerous as life under a sadistic master. That's what 15-year-old Naomi learns after she escapes the brutal confines of life on an Alabama plantation. Striking out on her own, she leaves behind her beloved Momma and sister, Hazel, and takes refuge in a Georgia brothel run by a freewheeling, gun-toting Jewish madam named Cynthia.

I was drawn to this book because of the summary, however, I felt the book flowed like a Toni Morrison novel. I lasted 3 chapters and returned it to Audible.
