War is coming. Despite everything Maya and her father have done, the veil that protects the human world is failing. The Lord of Shadows has raised an army powerful enough to challenge the orishas. And it’s only a matter of time before he breaks through the veil and destroys Maya’s neighborhood and the rest of the world.

Great middle school adventure
Revisado: 10-23-23
My middle school kids love this kind of series (magical kids going on quests), if yours do to this is a winner. Soneela Nankani is a reliable narrator, I actually breathed a sigh of relief when I saw it was voiced by her. So often the wrong narrator can take you right out of the story, but as always, she did a great job.

Historia
Annabeth is terrified. Just when she’s about to be reunited with Percy - after six months of being apart, thanks to Hera - it looks like Camp Jupiter is preparing for war. As Annabeth and her friends Jason, Piper, and Leo fly in on the Argo II, she can’t blame the Roman demigods for thinking the ship is a Greek weapon. With its steaming bronze dragon figurehead, Leo’s fantastical creation doesn’t appear friendly. Annabeth hopes that the sight of their praetor Jason on deck will reassure the Romans.

Great story, wrong narrator
Revisado: 02-12-23
Love the whole series, but they often switch narrators from book to book. For this book the narrator has a twang and makes every single character sound like a midwestern car salesman. Not my favorite.

Great kid’s story, poor narration
Revisado: 12-05-22
I’m always disappointed when a popular book worth a large following winds up with a sub par narrator. It’s still worth listening to, but the cheesy voices the narrator does for each character, and poor emotive quality (AKA none) draws you out of the story constantly.

Amari Peters has never stopped believing her missing brother, Quinton, is alive. Not even when the police told her otherwise, or when she got in trouble for standing up to bullies who said he was gone for good. So when she finds a ticking briefcase in his closet, containing a nomination for a summer tryout at the Bureau of Supernatural Affairs, she’s certain the secretive organization holds the key to locating Quinton - if only she can wrap her head around the idea of magicians, fairies, aliens, and other supernatural creatures all being real.

Great story, perfect narrator
Revisado: 10-08-22
I’ll admit, I was pretty “meh” when I first read this to my kids. It wasn’t bad, but it didn’t wow me either. I’m happy it wowed my kids enough that they wanted to hear it again, and we got the audiobook. Turns out the problem wasn’t the story- it was my mediocre narration! Imani Parks brings this story to life. A narrator can make it break an audiobook, and she does a GREAT job. She sounds like a young girl (nothing like a clearly adult voice narrating first person for a kid), all the characters have distinct voices and inflictions, and the pace is perfect. If you loved Aru Shaw or Percy Jackson, you’ll love Amari Peters.

Perfect story and narrator
Revisado: 12-13-21
Love both the story and it’s excellent narration. The more audible books I listen to, the more I realize the narrator can elevate or ruin the story.

Historia
We are a group of storytellers, performers, and musicians. We tell Irish myths to a live audience with live music. Candlelit Tales was founded by brother-sister storytelling duo Aron and Sorcha Hegarty. Driven by a passion for Irish mythology, we started retelling the stories to a near-empty room upstairs in a Dublin pub one rainy evening in November. The next week, the room was a lot less empty, and we were joined by musician Ru O’Sé. By the fourth week, the room was full, and so was the hall outside. We realised that when we share our passion, it becomes contagious. And we’ve been ...

Racist language
Revisado: 11-06-21
It’s upsetting to be well into a story with your children and smack in the middle of it, there’s some racist language and ideas.
I know the source material is older, but it’s in the public domain, and it would have been easy to simply change a few lines without changing the flow of the story. In the very first tale, the evil magician turns the “fine, handsome, prince-like” men into “lowly negros” when thwarting the protagonist.
Nope.
Returning it now, and having to have a long talk with the kids about causal racism… again.
The narrator was good, it’s not a knock against her.
