How do you live with the pain of watching someone you love suffer from addiction? And how do you cope with the grief of losing them, especially when your job is to make people laugh every day? You find comfort in walking the hard path with others, peace in holding the good with the grief, and strength in the One who is bigger than your pain.

Rickey left it all on the table. This audio left me inspired to work through my grief journey. I could feel both the highs & the lows of his story. His story invoked tears and laughter & provided much strength for MY journey.

Outstanding Leaders
Revisado: 06-20-22
This was a phenomenal listen! Taking lessons from the past & making them relevant in to today’s workforce/leaders is a brilliant approach to viewing Robert Carter’s life! The book left me with many thoughts on Robert’s life, it also left me wanting to know more about this man. The narration was a high point & made the book pleasurable to listen to. I’m walking away from this audible with a combination of lessons on history, genealogy & leadership. New & established leaders can both benefit from a glance into the life of A Man Named Robert.

Historia
Born on a plantation in Charles City, Virginia, Pheby Delores Brown has lived a relatively sheltered life. Shielded by her mother’s position as the estate’s medicine woman and cherished by the Master’s sister, she is set apart from the others on the plantation, belonging to neither world. She’d been promised freedom on her eighteenth birthday, but instead of the idyllic life she imagined with her true love, Essex Henry, Pheby is forced to leave the only home she has ever known. She unexpectedly finds herself thrust into the bowels of slavery at the infamous Devil’s Half Acre.

Amazing Listen
Revisado: 04-06-21
What an appropriate time for me to listen to this work of art, as it easily invoked disdain for the enslavers while producing love & compassion for the enslaved. For me this story takes what I’ve been seeing in the news to a new level. The whipping of Essex brings to mind the kneeling on the neck of George Floyd. Thanks to the author for the research & bringing these characters to life! I will definitely take a trip to Richmond to visit the Lumpkin jail & trail.

The poetic prose of the author kept me engaged the entire book, never giving too much information as to let the reader know what would happen next. The author wrote & the narrator voiced vivid scenes planting the reader in Barbados! Looking forward to the next work of art from Ms. Cherie Jones.

Just as I Am is my truth. It is me, plain and unvarnished, with the glitter and garland set aside. Here, I am indeed Cicely, the actress who has been blessed to grace the stage and screen for six decades. Yet I am also the church girl who once rarely spoke a word. I am the teenager who sought solace in the verses of the old hymn for which this book is named. I am a daughter and mother, a sister, and a friend. I am an observer of human nature and the dreamer of audacious dreams.

This was a great read/listen. Ms. Tyson’s life is one to look to for strength & guidance. I will now have to purchase the physical book, as it can serve as a great conversation starter. Her independence was a staple throughout her entire life, that’s a lesson for all women. Such an amazing life!

Nice Story
Revisado: 10-27-20
I love ancestry /genealogy, however this recollection I found overly verbose. I applaud the author’s bravery for telling the story & tenacity in researching to find every possible answer. My favorite part was when Gail met her mother’s family and was able to identify family members in a photo that no one else knew. I didn’t enjoy the narrator as much as I would have liked. Overall it was a nice story.

Historia
In 1961, Sarah M. Broom’s mother Ivory Mae bought a shotgun house in the then-promising neighborhood of New Orleans East and built her world inside of it. It was the height of the Space Race and the neighborhood was home to a major NASA plant - the postwar optimism seemed assured. A book of great ambition, Sarah M. Broom’s The Yellow House tells a hundred years of her family and their relationship to home in a neglected area of one of America’s most mythologized cities.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

I appreciate the strength of the author to follow through with this story. There are no doubt, similar stories out there, but the author of this one is worthy of acclaim! My take aways are, “Invest in what you know, stand up for what you believe to be right & even the alleged powerful can be deceived”. I’m encouraged & fascinated by the bravery of Tyler Schultz and the LTC who voiced his regulatory concerns.
Phenomenal writing!

The characters of this story immediately come to life! The colorful descriptions and language drew me in. I learned to love & to despise the characters. Being basically a reader of non-fiction, this was a great break from the norm. I’m saddened the we’ve lost the author & likelyj will not have a sequel. I will search for author interviews, as I’m curious as to how she developed the characters & where they sprang from.

Jenifer Lewis keeps it real in this provocative and touching memoir by a Midwestern girl with a dream whose journey from poverty to Hollywood will move, shock, and inspire listeners. Told in the audacious voice her fans adore, Jenifer describes a road to fame made treacherous by dysfunction and undiagnosed mental illness, including a sex addiction. Yet, supported by loving friends and strengthened by "inner soldiers", Jenifer never stopped entertaining and creating.

Underwhelmed
Revisado: 05-24-18
I struggled to connect with this book, while there were many similarities with my life there was something missing. I appreciate the honesty of the story but found at times it was filled with name drops and bragging about repetitious escapades. I’m sure it was healing to write, but at times I found it somewhat self righteous. I did manage to finish the book but will not recommend this book to others.
