Ha-yong's virally popular Internet sensations bridge science fiction with reality in these terrifying stories. Modern day cannibals, shadowy techno cults, urban mysteries, and savage murders - this horror story collection is so real that it will leave you questioning the dark plots and motives behind the everyday people and events in your own life.

A world I did not expect
Revisado: 01-25-19
When I first bought the audiobook I was familiar with the building blocks of the author. “Life is Beta” is the short story he is best known for. I did not expect that more than half of the book would be set in the same world, expanding upon the app and people surrounding it.
Following the stories based on Life is Beta, are several stand-alone stories, which I wish did not stand alone. I wanted sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and instant reboots.
I loved the format of the book. Each chapter was only about 10 minutes long, meaning it was a very quick set up, story, climax, and conclusion. It never felt like a grind to get through.
Some chapters may not be for everyone though. The violence may seem gratuitous or added simply for shock value but one must keep in mind that these were originally published individually. Also, the fact that it may have made you uncomfortable means it worked.
The only thing that even borders on a complaint for this book is that I am generally taken out of the story when a male narrator attempts to read in a female voice. But that’s nearly every audiobook I’ve listened to.

Historia
In a prosperous yet gruesomely violent near future, superhero vigilantes battle thugs whose heads are full of supervillain fantasies. The peace is kept by a team of smooth, well-dressed negotiators called The Men in Fancy Suits. Meanwhile a young girl is caught in the middle and thinks the whole thing is ridiculous. Zoey, a recent college graduate with a worthless degree, makes a reluctant trip into the city after hearing that her estranged con artist father died in a mysterious yet spectacular way.

Delivers what is promised
Revisado: 09-14-16
David Wong is easily my favorite author and I was a little skeptical when I found out he would be writing something that was not related to John Dies At The End. However, Wong easily grabs the reader/listener and pulls them into the story.
Without going into too much detail about characters, plot, pacing, etc., it was all great to listen to. I'm happy to finish the book so close to the news that it will be turned into a television series.
The book's narrator did a great job, as it can be awkward hearing a male reads as a female. Not so much with a female reading as a male and works very well when she reads as the main character herself.
Absolutely recommend this book.

Diary takes the form of a "coma diary" kept by one Misty Tracy Wilmot as her husband lies senseless in a hospital after a suicide attempt. It is a dark, hilarious, and poignant act of storytelling from America's favorite, most inventive nihilist.

Great book, great narrator
Revisado: 04-11-16
Chuck Palahniuk is a great author. I've bought this book multiple times already but I enjoy listening while driving too.
One thing that bothers me is when the narrator just isn't right or the voices change change with each character and it doesn't sound right. Particularly when a male reads a female part. However Martha Plimpton does an incredible job reading all female voices so that they sound the part and it doesn't throw you or some weird when she reads a male voice.
Highly recommended.

Historia
Warning: You may have a huge, invisible spider living in your skull. This is not a metaphor. You will dismiss this as ridiculous fearmongering. Dismissing things as ridiculous fearmongering is, in fact, the first symptom of parasitic spider infection - the creature secretes a chemical into the brain to stimulate skepticism, in order to prevent you from seeking a cure. That’s just as well, since the “cure” involves learning what a chain saw tastes like. You can’t feel the spider, because it controls your nerve endings.

Worth it.

Would you listen to This Book Is Full of Spiders again? Why?
I definitely would. I enjoyed the book quite a bit (and multiple times), however I spend much of my time driving and this is a very convenient way to listen.
Who was your favorite character and why?
All of the characters are great and relatable in many different ways, but it's a fair bet that my, and many other peoples favorite character, is John. If you've read or listened to this book or the one that came before it, John Dies At The End, you'll know why.
What does Nick Podehl bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
With Nick reading the story, and doing a fantastic job of it, you actually get more of a performance than just a story read to you. He brings unique voices to the table that sound like what you imagine the characters would sound like while reading the book.
If you could rename This Book Is Full of Spiders, what would you call it?
"David Wong's Second Go-Round: You Don't Need To Read John Dies At The End But You Wouldn't Regret It If You Did"
Any additional comments?
You can probably tell by that renaming question, but I'm partial to John Dies At The End. That's the only reason for this audiobook's story getting four of the five stars. It didn't quite keep up with the original. If I hadn't read JDATE, my mind would still have been blown by This Book Is Full Of Spiders.
And I'm not kidding about Nick Podehl's performance. A bad reader with bad voices will pull you right out of the story but Nick made it better.
