This was an excellent, well researched, and well told history. it's a pity about the narrator. Careful, technicaly good diction, but his delivery is wooden and monitone. It sounds like an AI reader. I had to speed up the play back just to make it listenable.

The writing in this book is terrible. The story is clunky, the character development atrocious. It's hardly even worth writing a negative review.

I do not understand why so many narrators feel sci-fi and fantasy have to be read in a ridiculous, bombastic manner, as though every sentence should be followed by trumpets going, 'duh, duh duh!" Johnathan Davis not only emloys this annoying technique, but does so badly. He uses accents at random, and does them badly. He also reads commonplace sentences as though the character we're screaming them in emotional terror, then gives the authors clue of "he growled". The story itself was decent but not great, more of a bridge or place keeper in the series. One wonders if the book itself couldn't have been dispensed with in a summary chapter and a few explanatory musings by key characters, and the meat of the series started right back in uppon.

I never abandon a book unfinished, no matter how bad. Untill now, that is. The writing is atrocious. Action packed, but completely nonsensical. The heros stagger from one poorly thought out scene to the next without any sense of purpose. The writer can't seem to remember the basics of his characters. In one chapter it's important to protect the scientist / spy because she lacks self healing nano tech. A few chapters later she's shrugging off mortal wounds and acting like a cross between James Bond and the Terminator thanks to her nano tech. The action is unbelievable, the characters are uninteresting, rudimentary sketches, and the plot becomes more stultifying the deeper you read. This book reads like the ideas for a particularly bad first person shooter game.

A contract for a series, material for a book.

This book is a study in what happens when an author gets a contract for a series but only has material enough for a book. It drags, needlessly so. Also, we have a heroine that is supposed to be a highly trained officer in the galactic fleet. We're repeatedly told she is a hot shot pilot with vast combat experience, and a champion at hand to hand combat, but the woman can't seem to exercise any practical control of her emotions or do more than the most cursory strategic thinking, to the continuing detriment of the mission. The result is a wreck of a character you just can't care about. I doubt I'll read further from this author. I doubt I'll ever be bored enough to willingly subject myself to such concentrated banality.
