amazing book
Revisado: 12-18-23
I don't think I have ever enjoyed a war autobiography book more than this,l one, and I read plenty of them. For a long time I avoided Vietnam books, thinking the subject matter too depressing, but I am glad I read this book.

the story was ok, maybe a bit less dramatic than most Rick Brant adventures, but the reader was terrible. his voices were all bland and emotionless, but the one he used for Rick was the worst & sounded like an 8 year old kid with a lisp, instead of a young man. Seek out the books narrated by J.J. Campanella instead.

Part autobiography and part biography of all the people he met, this is a very interesting book. It captures the 1910s-1920s like no other story I've ever read.
And the reader reads it like only he can. Highly recommended.

Historia
Romania, 1989. Communist regimes are crumbling across Europe. Seventeen-year-old Cristian Florescu dreams of becoming a writer, but Romanians aren’t free to dream; they are bound by rules and force. Amidst the tyrannical dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu in a country governed by isolation and fear, Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer. He’s left with only two choices: betray everyone and everything he loves—or use his position to creatively undermine the most notoriously evil dictator in Eastern Europe.

I was born under communism and lived there for many years, and while it was not as bad as in Rumania, there were many similarities. For years I have searched for a book that described that black chapter in human history, written especially for young readers, and this book is it

The Crusades is an authoritative, accessible single-volume history of the brutal struggle for the Holy Land in the Middle Ages. Thomas Asbridge - a renowned historian who writes with "maximum vividness" (Joan Acocella, The New Yorker) - covers the years 1095 to 1291 in this big, ambitious, listenable account of one of the most fascinating periods in history.

not accurate
Revisado: 04-07-23
This is one of only a handful of audiobooks that I could not finish. There are so many historical omissions that you wonder whether the author knew his medieval history, both European and Islamic. if he had, he might not have pondered so much about why urban 2nd called for the crusades, because there were already historical precedents of Popes getting involved in politics, and calling for Christians to defend Europe from various invaders, including Saracens, Byzantines, and Normans. Meanwhile, the author completely ignores the traditionally held view that it was the Byzantine defeat at Manzikert and subsequent loss of Asia Minor that did in fact result in the Byzantine emperor appealing to the Pope for assistance against the Turks. The author seems to know very little about the Byzantine empire, even thought their plight and later politics were so important during the time of the crusades. Finally, he seems to present some points of view which come from Muslim apologists. Not recommended. If you want a good history of the Crusades, look elsewhere, and in earlier works.

Historia
The Berlin blockade brought former allies to the brink of war. Britain, France, the United States and the Soviet Union defeated and began their occupation of Germany in 1945, and within a few years, the Soviets and their Western partners were jockeying for control of their former foe. Attempting to thwart the Allied powers' plans to create a unified West German government, the Soviets blocked rail and road access to the western sectors of Berlin in June 1948.

Historia
Twilight of the Gods is a riveting account of the harrowing last year of World War II in the Pacific, when the US Navy won the largest naval battle in history; MacArthur made good his pledge to return to the Philippines; waves of kamikazes attacked the Allied fleets; the Japanese fought to the last man on one island after another; B-29 bombers burned down Japanese cities; and Hiroshima and Nagasaki were vaporized. Toll's narratives of combat in the air, at sea, and on the beaches are gripping, but he also takes the listener into the halls of power in Washington and Tokyo.

Historia
In this gripping narrative history, Seth G. Jones reveals the CIA's involvement in a landmark victory for democracy during the Cold War. In 1983, while Soviet- backed Polish prime minister Wojciech Jaruzelski worked to crush a budding opposition movement through martial law, the CIA launched a sophisticated intelligence campaign supporting dissident groups. With President Ronald Reagan's support, American funds bankrolled clandestine newspapers, broadcasting, and information warfare. This initiative, code-named QRHELPFUL, proved vital in establishing a free and democratic Poland.
