Historia
When a spaceship landed in an open field in the quiet mill town of Sorrow Falls, Massachusetts, everyone realized humankind was not alone in the universe. With that realization everyone freaked out for a little while. Or almost everyone. The residents of Sorrow Falls took the news pretty well. This could have been due to a certain local quality of unflappability, or it could have been that in three years the ship did exactly nothing other than sit quietly in that field, and nobody understood the full extent of this nothing the ship was doing better than the people who lived right next door.

Good story, good writing, WRONG narrator
Revisado: 02-26-18
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This is a clever book and I enjoyed the story and the characters. The reader is a competent, even very good performer, but absolutely positively without any doubt the WRONG voice for this book. There are clever and sometimes snarky quips from Annie, but they fall flat coming from the voice of Grandpa Walton. It's like having Mister Rogers as the announcer on SNL's Weekend Update. The jokes just don't work. Why not a voice like Katie Koster or Hillary Huber? I spent more time wondering about the motivation for the casting (misogyny? nepotism? incompetence?) than I did thinking about the plot and the characters. With the right reader this would be at least a 4 overall, maybe a 5. I'll be skipping the audio version of the next book, but I'll put it in my reading list.

Historia
A colleague's suicide. Pedophiles. A missing child. A serial killer. You never know your luck, muses Rebus. Driven by instinct and experience, he searches for connections, against official skepticism. But at night, unsoothed by whiskey, Rebus faces his ghosts, and the prospect of his daughter's possibly permanent paralysis. Soldiering through dank, desperate slums and the tiny flats of the Scottish chic, Rebus uncovers a chain of crime, deceit, and hidden sins.

Awful, awful monotoned narration.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would only recommend this audio book if you, like me, are trying to go through the Inspector Rebus series in order and you really need it to be audio. I'm only partway through and I'm severely tempted to stop and buy a Kindle or printed version instead. This guy's reading has all the pizzazz of an old fashioned radio weather reporter.
I think this may be only the second book in my life where I'll try accelerating the speed to 1.25x in the app, just to get it over faster.
