Historia
Jenny Sutherland is pretty, but the lovely country girl is also vain. Her guardian has decided that a London season is just the thing to give the fair Jenny a sorely deserved set-down. Meanwhile, the handsome Duke of Pelham, owner of 67 Clarges Street, has returned from Europe at last - to find a wife. Used to women doting on him, the Duke turns the ton against the disdainful Jenny who dares to spurn him at her very first London soiree. Alas, he’s fallen in love with the miss he’s just ruined!

Happy to find an unabridged Heyer
Revisado: 04-29-23
Yes the story is problematic as others have noted, so this should not be one's first Heyer, in my opinion. Get yourself hooked on others and then make a decision if you can overlook the challenging mores of this story. On the plus side this is an unabridged version--I can't see the point in abridged versions of an author whose command of the language is as delicious as Georgette Heyer. Not so positive, the narrator does an "okay" job, but the women's voices tend to be silly and the men's overly nasal (Vidal does not sound 24 years old!). If you want to listen to a Heyer book beautifully narrated, listen to These Old Shades, read by Sarah Nichols: it is extraordinary. Which leads me to the most important question, why does Audible US offer such a pittance of Heyer audiobooks when there are over 60 available on Audible UK? Please renegotiate the geographic licensing!

Historia
Society believes the worst of Justin Alastair, the notorious Duke of Avon. When he encounters a young boy, Léon, who is running from his abusive brother, Avon employs the boy as his page, parading him around parties and other society events in full view of his bitter rival, the Comte de Saint-Vire. But the truth is soon uncovered: Léon is a girl named Léonie and is actually the legitimate child of the Comte and his wife. While Avon is intent on his plan to reveal the Comte’s duplicity and ruin him, he is charmed by Léonie’s kindness, falls in love, and becomes a changed man.

I loved the book and loved the narration
Revisado: 04-15-23
What a wonderful performance! This is a delightful book made all the more so by the narrator, who brings life and energy to each character. I was sad to have finished it but instead decided to listen again and on second listening I am picking up even more. Brava to Sarah Nichols. What I cannot understand is why Audible US does not offer more Georgette Heyer books when so many are available from Penguin and through Audible UK? Heyer's books translate wonderfully to audio and Audible US is really missing the boat.

Historia
The new vicar had never wanted a picture-postcard parish - or a huge and haunted vicarage. Nor had she wanted to walk into a dispute over a controversial play about a 17th-century clergyman accused of witchcraft...a story that certain long-established families would rather remained obscure. But this is Ledwardine, steeped in cider and secrets...a paradise of cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. And also - as Merrily Watkins and her teenage daughter, Jane, discover - a village where horrific murder is a tradition that spans centuries.

Wonderful - Take a listen!
Revisado: 12-19-21
The Wine of Angels is the first in the Merrily Watkins series, and can be read/listened to as a stand-alone. I read this originally as a traditional book, and, having finished the series, I am now re-reading via listening . OK, I loved it as a hard-copy book, and I am loving it all over again as an audiobook. The narration is excellent. Take a listen!

Gripping story and strong narration
Revisado: 10-16-21
This is an excellent unabridged Merrily Watkins story (note that there is also an abridged version available on Audible, so be careful). Great story and such a sense of place. Phil Rickman deserves a much wider American audience...and one way to do that Audible, is stop tagging these books as "horror" and "occult."

Merrily Watkins, parish priest, single mum and deliverance consultant to the Diocese of Hereford, heads for the Malvern Hills to investigate an alleged paranormal dimension to a spate of road accidents in the sleepy village of Wychehill. Merrily is called in when two people are killed in a head-on crash that is also linked to the revamped local pub which, it seems, has injected the valley with a shattering, strobing surge of inner-city nightlife...and drugs.

Wonderful story, the series continues...
Revisado: 10-11-21
I continue to be thrilled with the fact that Audible has added many of these wonderful unabridged versions of Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins series to its offerings. The books are beautifully written, character-rich, fast-paced, and just a treat to read, and now to listen to. The only issue I had with this version was the weird accent that Julie Maisey used for the American character, who was supposed to be from California. The accent she used was Alabama southern belle, and distracting, at least for this American's ears. That said, as soon as I finish this review, I'm downloading #9.

Revisado: 10-07-21
The Smile of a Ghost is the seventh in Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins series. After gobbling up the first six on Kindle, I was excited to see Audible's now offering a whole slew of this series. So, once I finished #6 I snapped up #7. Emma Powell's narration is fabulous. Phil RIckman has a wonderful ear for dialogue, and Powell handles the various voices beautifully. Really, a wonderful match up.

OK, I didn't check first, but you should: ABRIDGED
Revisado: 01-25-21
Well, I finally figured it out. I have both this version and the Kindle. My practice is to read the Kindle version, while using the Audible one to keep the book going while walking the dog, in the kitchen, etc. First I couldn't figure out the chapter breaks not matching, and then, checking back on Kindle, found HUGE chunks had been left out that I had to go back and reread. So that's a waste of a bloody credit. Why would I listen to an abridged Elizabeth George novel, Audible? Let's see what else. Oh, as others have noted, the narrator is meh, previous narrators have been much better. And the music!! What is that creepy waste of time? Fortunately I am only 30% through the Audible version and can "close the book on it," and switch over to Kindle for the rest of the book. Note to self: READ the REVIEWS.

The narrators destroy a good book
Revisado: 10-16-18
I have never before noticed the power of poor narration to destroy a perfectly good book. I've appreciated great narration, but could terrible narrators actually destroy a good book? Unfortunately, yes. Pick up the book and read it. You will enjoy it. Don't even give the Audible version a try. You don't want those over-acted phony voices in your head.

"It was the best of times and the worst of times." In one of the most famous openings of any novel, Dickens masterfully presents the turmoil of the French Revolution, which is the backdrop for a novel of love, patience, hope, and self-sacrifice. This version is read by Anton Lesser, whose award-winning Dickens recordings in their abridged form has now resulted in the opportunity to read the full unabridged text.

Masterful Narration
Revisado: 09-03-12
What made the experience of listening to A Tale of Two Cities the most enjoyable?
Listening to DIckens is a special experience. I've switched between the written word and Audible as I've moved through the book, and I've newly appreciated how much I enjoy being read to, especially by someone as masterful as this narrator.
What did you like best about this story?
While I've read other Dickens, I'd never gotten around to A Tale of Two Cities and its a wonderful story of the French Revolution.
What about Anton Lesser’s performance did you like?
He captures the voices, the cadence, and the emotion. It's not "read," it is "performed."
