Historia
The daughter of a Taiwanese father and white mother, Vi Liu has never quite fit into her Midwestern college town. Aimless after getting dumped by her boyfriend and dropping out of college, Vi works at the front desk of a hotel where she greets guests, refills cucumber water samovars, and tries to evade her bubbly blond coworker, Rachel. Little does Vi know her life is about to be permanently transformed when she agrees to a night out with Rachel. In the alley outside the bar, Vi discovers a strange blob—a small living creature with beady black eyes.

Stellar performance by narrator
Revisado: 02-11-25
This is definitely one of those books that was greatly enhanced by the talent of the narrator. I thought she hit just the right tone of the protagonist and did a good job differentiating among the voices of the other characters .It was hard to predict what turns this novel was going to take which makes it much more enjoyable for me.

Not at all what I wanted.or expectec
Revisado: 11-24-24
I love time travel stories and I was hoping this would be a "fish out of water" story, what a person from the 50s would think about our modern world. I didn't finish the book but I think I was about 1\3 to 1\2 through and there was very little of that. It started to.turn into an "aliens are among us " story, which is my least favorite genre so I stopped listening. Very disappointed

I love the Walt Longmire series. This one is a bit different but I think I liked it even more than the others. Not much I can say without giving away a key plot point but the action never stops. I'll be surprised if this isn't made into a movie and I'll be first in line if it is. in fact, it reminded me a little of the first "Alien" movie. I think the narrator is perfect for the Longmire character.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-20-23
I was very interested to learn more about Patrick Stewart's acting and show business career. There was, I felt, way too much about his childhood before it finally got into his career. I'm guessing the author felt that to totally understand him one had to know about his childhood in detail. I didn't go into the book looking to understand Stuart's psyche, I did find the parts about his career interesting but I would have liked to skip forward to that part.

Historia
May 1912. After the previous year’s deadly heatwave, it’s been an uneventful spring in Littleton Cotterell. Though for Lady Hardcastle and her fiercely loyal lady’s maid Flo, at least there are the provincial delights of the village’s inaugural art exhibition—and bicycle race—to look forward to. But at the exhibition opening, there’s a panicked shout of ‘Fire!’ In the confusion, the main attraction—an extremely expensive book—is stolen from under everyone’s nose, as is a valuable painting lent by Sir Hector Farley-Stroud.

Could listen to this narrator read the phone book
Revisado: 09-15-23
I'm addicted to the stories of Lady Hardcastle and Florence Armstrong. They are charming and original. I'm pleased that the author doesn't spend a lot of time on the characters' back stories in the sequels. I enjoy the plot, the witty repartee and the historical information such as how bicycles are just becoming common In 1912. The excellent narration just adds to the enjoyment of these books. The narrator does a great job of subtly
distinguishing each speaker and just generally has a delightful speaking voice.

The art world is a much dirtier, nastier business than you might expect. Tony Tetro, one of the most renowned art forgers in history, will make you question every masterpiece you’ve ever seen in a museum, gallery, or private collection. Tetro’s “Rembrandts,” “Caravaggios,” “Miros,” and hundreds of other works now hang on walls around the globe.

Slimy character
Revisado: 07-13-23
I'm fascinated by art theft and art forgery so I thought this book would be Interesting. It was, but I was very, there is no other word for it, disgusted by Tetro. He was never sorry or ashamed of what he did , in fact most of the time he seems quite proud of himself and thinks he is a great artist. It seems to me only chance that he didn't end up being a counterfeiter. The narrator did a great job of sounding like a scumbag.

Didn't want it to end
Revisado: 05-01-23
I always thought of Curtis Sittenfeld as a " Serious Writer". I loved her book Rodham.
She writes comedies amazingly well, could definitely write for SNL. I loved all the characters, although I thought the male love interest (sorry, it's been a while since I read the book and I forgot his name) was a little too good to be true). I had a mild panic attack toward the end of the book when I realized it was eventually going to end. The narrator did a wonderful job.

When Lauren Kessler was 12, her ballet instructor crushed not just her dreams of being a ballerina but also her youthful self-assurance. Now, many decades and three children later, Kessler embarks on a journey to join a professional company to perform in The Nutcracker. Raising the Barre is more than just one woman's story; it is a story about shaking things up, taking risks, and ignoring good sense and forgetting how old you are and how you're "supposed" to act.

Charming and educational
Revisado: 10-23-22
I know little about ballet and have never taken classes. Perhaps because of this I found the peek into the inner world of ballet fascinating. I admired Ms. Kessler for sharing her self-doubts (and how she overcame many of them). The narrator sounded perfect for the part of an educated, worldly midlife woman stretching out of her comfort zone. I double-checked before buying another of Ms. Kessler's books to be sure it was Hollis McCarthy narrating.
