Fantasy Tale Gone Wrong

The over-arching story has a good premise, no, a great premise and ideally that is what makes a good read. However, it doesn't take very long to realize that if you want to know where this fantasy tale of wariors, wizards, and kings is going, you're going to have to muddle through some romance. Normally that is not necessarily a bad thing, but this author's idea of romance revolves solely around the physical aspects and are described in no uncertain graphic detail. In other words, the sex scenes are straight up porn.

The shame is, that if you remove all the porn, you're left with a great story and instead of ending in the middle of a battle game which the players are forced to participate in as a punishment, you could either combine this trilogy into one book or add enough relevant material to make it a worthy trilogy.

The performance was well done and I have to give high marks to Gary Furlong for bringing the best out of the work regardless of its tasteless and needless smut.

Great narration, great overall story, lousy with graphically descriptive sex scenes. I could not finish listening to this.
The storyline, sans sexual content, is intriguing, but just when you think you are pushing into a well built adventure, you are sidetracked by a kiss that turns into a full-blown XXX scene. Eventually, you cannot listen to a single chapter without hearing a more detailed love scene than you could watch in the most intense porn movie you ever watched in your investigative college days.
The immersion into the story becomes impossible unless your actually into aural porn.
The narrator had great rhythm, timing, and inflection. Too bad it was wasted on this.
The story could have been 5-star had the romance scenes been toned down.

This is a near miss story written with an excellent topic and good ideas but with less than blockbuster style. The book screams feminism in a storyline that is, or should be, obviously beyond such concerns.
Frequently the author slips back on modern day, real world idiom and euphemism after carefully crafting a unique fantasy setup. These immersion breaking moments make the story so much harder to read, or hear.
On top of this, the reader of this book is not good at conveying true emotion into the read. Much of the material is read in improper vocal tone and inflection. Quite often, there is more passion given to reading the chapter titles seductively than to the conversations or backdrop painting the book requires.

A Great Read - A Poor Listen

A terrific fantasy tale, Dougla Niles takes a spoiled prince of an island nation and raises him to learn responsibility and earn respect in an adventure against an awakened and growing evil with the aid of a small group of allies and a weakened and failing godess.

Unfortunately narrated by Dara Rosenberg who's talent cannot match the material. Her cadence is mechanical with so much emphasis on enunciation that she sacrifices emotional and storyline flow. In some places it sounds as if the speed was increased in editing to generate a higher frequency for the voice of a diminutive character than actually changing her own voice to do it.

I can honestly say that this is the worst narration I've heard from Audible. This means there's every hope that further books will only get better from here.

If I had not read the books years ago, this narration would be a deal breaker. However, the books are so enjoyable that I am willing to put up with this to hear the tale once again. If I could find this book in large print (a necessity for me these days), I would not buy the audio version.

Its a real struggle to finish this audiobook since the story ends abruptly during the first chapter. It cuts out at the same spot every time. It is as if during the editing process, they just forgot to reconnect this part to the rest of the story and tgen saved it.

A banal tale, the story lacks for a good ending. It just ends. There are many possibilities but none are explored. The Narrator, however, has a pleasant with excellent enunciation.
