Really good performance!
Revisado: 01-17-24
This fourth book in The High Republic series was written as a script, and it really delivered in this audio version. The voice characterization was spot-on. The story was great, diving into the backstory of Lorna Dee concurrently with the current events of the series. I really enjoyed this.

Fellow at Ethic & Public Policy Center, scholar at The Institute for Human Ecology at CUA and the nationally best-selling author of the Theology of Home series, Carrie Gress argues that fifty years of radical feminism have had the opposite of the intended effect and have granted primacy of place to the traditionally male sphere of life, while simultaneously devaluing the typical attributes, virtues, and strengths of women.

Illuminating history of modern feminism
Revisado: 10-22-23
Carrie Gress has written an excellent history of modern feminism, starting from the early roots and working through the stages to the present day. She describes the people involved and the ways that they spread their message. She also describes the impact of their actions on modern society and the damage they have done. Finally, she gives suggestions for a pathway back to genuine feminism. I highly recommend this book as well as her other books.

Great, insightful book
Revisado: 10-12-23
Mike Pompeo has delivered a well written and insightful book on the workings of the CIA and the State Department during the Trump administration. I have a much better appreciation of the roles of these agencies in implementing foreign policy. Mike gives an optimistic yet sober analysis of America’s role in the world and how it has to deal with some of the less savory nations.
I highly recommend this book.

In this candid and vulnerable memoir, Kim Zember exposes details of her life that many wouldn’t dare to admit, let alone publish. Her desires for women, money, and comfort lead her down a path far from that of her Christian upbringing. Her impulsive lifestyle, coupled with an underlying fear of being alone, constantly drive her to drown out the small whisper of God she hears in moments of silence and stillness.

Great contribution to the Jensen Saga
Revisado: 06-23-23
I really enjoyed this book. I am glad to have the Jensen saga continue with this new series with Smoke’s kids grown. I also liked the introduction of Brice Rogers as a new character in the series, providing romantic tension between him and Smoke’s daughter Denny.
The story was enjoyable. An outlaw with a grudge trying to get revenge, but the twist being how Denny and Brice work together to thwart his efforts. I look forward to more in the series.
Long-time Jensen fans should be aware that “A High Sierra Christmas”, while not technically a part of this series, takes place chronologically between Books 1 and 2 of this series.

Historia
With a balance of wisdom, candor, and scholarly rigor, the beloved archbishop emeritus of Philadelphia, Charles J. Chaput, traces the human experience from ancient times to today to find threads of connection in our yearning for God, love, honor, beauty, truth, and immortality. He looks at our modern appetite for consumption and individualism and offers a penetrating analysis of how we got here and how we can look to our roots and our faith to find purpose each day amid the noise of competing desires.

Wonderful book, with both timely and timeless wisdom
Revisado: 04-30-21
Archbishop Chaput has written a wonderful book. He provides a strong defense of the timeless truths of the Catholic faith and its corresponding world view. He explains how this view, that all things flow from Jesus, led faithful men and women to be willing to die for it. He then gives timely advice to us today to help us distinguish between truths worth dying for and the false narratives of popular culture.
His explanation of the four final things, death, judgment, heaven and hell, is the best I have heard. This chapter alone makes the book worthwhile. I highly recommend this book.

This sharp commentary on the rise and current decline of Western Civilization touches on historical moments - including the building of early universities in the Middle Ages and the American Revolution - and figures - including Augustine, Acquinas, Edmund Burke, and Adam Smith - that exemplify the faith-reason synthesis at the heart of Western Civilization, as well as the modern villains that threaten to destroy it.

Excellent description of the current state of the West
Revisado: 10-24-19
Sam Gregg has once again brought his clear thinking and insights about Western Culture to us through this book. Here he gives a concise history of the relationship between faith and reason and how Western Civilization depends upon their consistency. He uses Pope Benedict XVI’s 2006 Regensburg Address as the starting point for the discussion. From there he shows the Jewish Roots of the positive relationship of faith and reason and how Jewish faith gave meaning to and enhanced Greek philosophy.
Gregg always shows the history of movements that tried to place opposition between the two, favoring one over the other. These movements have had bad consequences, sometimes frighteningly so.
He concludes with words of hope, explaining how the West can rescue itself by once again embracing the compatibility of faith and reason. He shows how the American Founding differed from the French Revolution in this regard, and how to move back in that direction.
Highly recommended.

Great book after slow start
Revisado: 03-02-19
Tim Zahn has written a book with a very imaginative storyline. The concept of a huge spaceship that needs “sibyls” to communicate with it was very intriguing to me. My one complaint was that the book took a while before I really knew where it was going. At first I wasn’t bonding with the characters. But once the action started I got very interested in it. And the last quarter of the book had some great twists to it. I am now anxious to see what happens in Book 2 of the series.
Tim Zahn continues to show why he is my favorite sci-fi author.

What is "the big lie" of the Democratic Party? That conservatives - and President Donald Trump in particular - are fascists. Nazis, even. In a typical comment, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow says the Trump era is reminiscent of "what it was like when Hitler first became chancellor." But in fact, this audacious lie is a complete inversion of the truth. Yes, there is a fascist threat in America - but that threat is from the Left and the Democratic Party.

Excellent analysis of our current state of affairs
Revisado: 09-27-17
This is a great book! It gives a thorough history of fascism and why it is a movement of the left. It shows the roots of this ideology in Italy, Germany, and yes, in America's progressive movement and Democratic Party. It shows how Mussolini and Hitler both used squads of thugs to terrorize their opponents on the way to power, and how the left in America is using these same tactics today.

It's not your imagination: civilized human society is collapsing. Communities no longer work toward a common good; children are no longer our first priority; businesses no longer value hard work; arts and skills have been lost; and gender is decided by the individual, not biology. We cannot reverse national and global trends, says professor Anthony Esolen, but we can build communities that live up to humanity's promise and responsibility.

Excellent diagnosis and prescription for America
Revisado: 05-04-17
Anthony Esolen has written another excellent book about contemporary America. He is a keen observer of our society. He has a wondrous ability to drill down into the culture and diagnose what is wrong and the he offers real actions we can take to change the direction of our country.
Dr. Esolen is very knowledgeable about both Western Civilization and the role Christianity played in building it. As an English professor he is also well versed in literature. With his broad base of knowledge he sees right through the lies of progressivism that are infecting our culture today. He easily shows how traditional Christian values are superior and more in conformity with human nature than modern progressivism. He points out how the leftist way of life has been a cancer that has spread misery and a loss of real freedom throughout our land under the guise of "liberty".
This is a sobering book, but also a hopeful book. Before we can rescue our nation we must look at the existing problems honestly, and Professor Esolen has done this well, abandoning the shackles of political correctness. Yet he has done this in a reasonable, scholarly manner, not in a scolding manner.
My heart burned while listening to this book. I am going to buy the print version as well so I can refer to the various chapters more easily in the future.
If you care about America and its Jude's-Christian foundations, you will read this book.
