Surprisingly good!!
Revisado: 11-02-20
The pacing of this MM historical was slow, but it turned into a delicious character study, helped along by really MASTERFUL narration by Gary Furlong. I waited so long to listen to it that there is a sequel, which I eagerly bought!
I received a free copy of the audiobook for my honest review.

Historia
Why are we the way we are? Who can we become? What stands in our way? In Dealing with the Devil, Tony Schwartz investigates these sweeping questions by fiercely reckoning with his own life choices, regrets, and aspirations. He confronts the shame that arose after he helped craft a persona for Donald Trump in The Art of the Deal that 30 years later aided in his election as president. He provides a window into understanding our complicated relationship with Trump, and the Trump in each of us.

Schwartz stripped bare, with Trump given less time
Revisado: 10-11-20
It was actually interesting to hear Tony Schwartz, who always seems so honest and self aware, come clean about his own difficult background and inadequacies.
My mother was borderline too, so I get it. Although the narration was uneven at times, I found many insights in here. Men should enjoy this as much as women.
Who knew that Schwartz was once a gossip columnist??

Historia
Once Donald Trump’s fiercest surrogate, closest confidant, and staunchest defender, Michael Cohen knows where the skeletons are buried. This is the most devastating business and political horror story of the century. As Trump’s lawyer and “fixer”, Cohen not only witnessed firsthand but was also an active participant in the inner workings of Trump’s business empire, political campaign, and presidential administration.

Raw and rueful
Revisado: 09-28-20
With a hard-driving narrator who seems to enjoy the cursing parts, I liked Disloyal for its insights into both the Trump personality and a man who grew to enjoy living in his shadow. Occasionally I winced when Cohen said something a bit too naive or clueless. He seemed to skirt the most evil part of Trump. I particularly enjoyed the part about Cory Lewandowski trying to shop a story to the tabloids that Jared is gay and Ivanka has affairs. I don't know how Cohen's wife stayed with him during all those years of catering to Trump's (a favorite word) bullshit. Certainly helpful in seeing the way T. operates.

Just a bit of a slog -- took me weeks to finish...
Revisado: 12-18-19
Taron Egerton does a valiant job here and the story is good, and certainly colorful! But at times it just sags. I think my favorite chapter was one that seemed rather flat and boring in the book, the chapter about Princess Diana's and Gianni Versace's deaths in the summer of 1997. Taron Egerton puts soul and vulnerability into the narration. I guess it's just more obvious when listening to it (rather than reading) how Elton John glosses over certain things, doesn't tackle them head on, and is probably STILL in denial about a lot of stuff in his life.
Nonetheless, it's funny and rollicking in the peaks, with some sobering valleys of substance abuse and dysfunction. And David Furnish comes across well, as someone to respect rather than a cipher.
Expect some lulls, but most people will probably enjoy it greatly. (I come to it as a John Lennon fan who was 13 when JL died. I loved "Empty Garden" and was fascinated to hear the backstory of their friendship.) Really, you get the duality of Elton throughout: the mensch and the grouser. Just when it gets too smug, he says something wise and insightful :) And on you go.

For some reason, the story didn't work for me...
Revisado: 05-26-19
I liked the bravura of Daniela Acitelli's performance in this period story set in WWII San Francisco. She did a great job, but I never felt any genuine surprise or eerieness from the story. Maybe some ominous music would have helped! The main character was hard to get a handle on, or care about.
