Historia
A fast-paced apocalyptic novel with a flair of Michael Crichton.Terrance Mathison, a veteran turned bioengineer, returns from a camping trip to find that a widespread pathogen is quickly rusting important metals once they’re touched. Amid the crumbling downfall of our technological society, he assembles a team of super-nerds and elite soldiers to find and secure a lab in hopes of developing a cure. As cities collapse and food supplies dwindle, Mathison and his team navigate an increasingly savage world. He has to decide what lengths he will go to for a cure.

A Front Row Seat
Revisado: 06-05-23
I've read post-apocalyptic novels before. This one is more like mid-apocalyptic; J.F. Lawrence throws the reader in just at the trigger point and then gives a perfect view of the rapid collapse of a civilization that is built on metal. You don't have to imagine a world where technologies that are dependent on metal (electronics/communications, vehicles, weapons, construction, culinary, etc.) disappear. Lawrence paints it for you in disturbing detail with his vivid writing.
His band of characters is thrown together in ad hoc fashion with one simple mission: save humanity - from the diseases that they carry, but also from themselves. The characters face conflict and setbacks often, but along the way, they learn about themselves and about being there for each other. There is a strong sense of family.
I thoroughly enjoyed this wild thrill ride, especially the hero, Wall. He is often introspective, sometimes guilt-wracked, and frequently a bullet magnet. Another character describes him as the unluckiest lucky man ever.
Brian Avers brings the characters, and all their clashing emotions, to life in the audiobook version. In my opinion, he is the perfect narrator for this story. The pace is not rushed, yet the listener feels all the urgency and tension. Truly excellent narration helps to make this a five-star experience.

Sexy and Intelligent!
Revisado: 09-18-22
Ms. Greer has created something wonderfully unique with her book, "Masked Intent." I thoroughly enjoyed the process of watching the main characters, Alexa and Mateo, navigate the twists and turns of building a new relationship. Their complex pasts, with plenty of dark secrets, make the path to their new romance quite treacherous.
While the book fits nicely within the Romance genre, it offers SO much more than the typical love story. The title gives a clue to this depth - only by removing your own mask can you earn trust. Trust is the major theme in the story and directly leads to my favorite parts of the book.
The periodic observations and comments from the morality players, Truth, Accountability, and Honesty (think of something like the Greek fates), added a fascinating aspect to the work. Their ability to see through all the human machinations and deflections was delightfully thought-provoking.
I've described the book to my wife as, "An excellent romance novel (complete with several steamy scenes) that is also literary, intelligent, and partly inspired by ancient Greek plays." It's a description I would hardly have believed if I'd read it, but here it is. Believe it!
"Masked Intent" reads well at so many levels. It is sexy and intelligent. And, isn't that exactly what we want in our lovers?

Good, but only 2 stars
Revisado: 06-30-21
I feel a need to add some comments to my 2 star rating. This is an excellent and thorough biography of Daniel Boone. I have a difficult time imagining how one could be better. However, this very strength of the book leads to my 2 star rating. There are times the book seems very academic. I felt overwhelmed by some of the glimpses of the documentation behind the writing and I lost the narrative flow. For anyone wanting a full picture, with detailed evidence, of the life and myths of Daniel Boone, I strongly recommend this book. For those looking for the stories and adventures, there is a lot of other content to sort through. I’m glad I listened to it, but I’m equally glad to be done.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Love trumps loss, but just barely!
Revisado: 03-03-18
War torn countries, towns, families and people color this book. The loss is palpable, tangible with the author's craft and the narrator's care. I'm not often given over to my emotions, but I teared up and even sobbed a couple times during this book. It felt good...important...to be touch in that way by this particular story.

An All-Time Favorite Well-Told (Sung?)
Revisado: 02-22-18
I have to admit I was cautious about listening to this one. I have LOVED this story for over 40 years and read it many times. I know how the voices sound, how the journey flows and how the tension builds. But, would Rob Inglis know? The simple answer is, "Yes!" His pacing and tone were excellent. He matched the voices I heard - no easy task considering the thirteen dwarves who often talk among themselves. Throw in the myriad of other characters, and Mr. Inglis had to exercise a fair bit of flexibility. He handled this very well.
When considering this purchase (my first audio book), I read through the most critical reviews. I was concerned about the comments stating that the songs were not handled well. Being familiar with the music Donald Swann wrote for these songs, I view them as an important part of the flavor of the story. I found Mr. Inglis' performance of the dwarven songs to be appropriate. He has a low voice, matching my concept of the dwarven vocal registers. I'll admit there was a bit of a strain in hearing the light/melodic elven songs. But, that wasn't enough to take away from the story. I'm a fan and this has been a new and exciting way to experience this classic tale! On to the next one!
