Historia
Titus Quayle was the best MI6 ever had - an operative of exceptional and lethal ability. But they burned him, abandoned him and left him for dead. Holly Morton is the daughter of the spymaster who first recognised Quayle’s potential and the key to unlocking a global conspiracy her father died trying to bring down. To uncover the truth, Quayle must keep her safe from the threat of a powerful enemy in a globetrotting race against time. Nowhere is safe.

I can't believe how highly rated this was
Revisado: 05-19-24
Underneath is the glimmering of a decent plot. However, the execution is pedestrian with more than one frankly unbelievable character. I persevered until about 40% of the way through. By then it was unable to relieve the tedium of traffic jams and I replayed another title. It lacks suspence, has grind, rather than pacing, and thin characters. It may get just a matter of taste, but listen to the sample well before you decide to buy.

Historia
How is it that we can walk unfamiliar streets while maintaining a sense of direction? How can we come up with shortcuts on the fly, in places we've never traveled? The answer is the complex mental map in our brains. This feature of our cognition is easily taken for granted, but it's also critical to our species' evolutionary success. In From Here to There, Michael Bond tells stories of the lost and found - Polynesian sailors, orienteering champions, early aviators - and surveys the science of human navigation.

outstanding effort at making content accessible
Revisado: 01-24-24
this is notable for its scholarship, but it's simultaneous accessibility. The narrator sold me as well - an American who pronounces English placenames with perfection. Yes, Birmingham sounded like Birming-umm, not Birming-HAM. And more rarely for any narrator pronounced Neanderthal correctly! it's German, so it's said like tarl, not thal with an emphasis like 'thing'. The whole book feels like a high quality approach. I've gone on to buy physical copies also. 10/10

Irene is a professional spy for the mysterious Library, which harvests fiction from different realities. And along with her enigmatic assistant Kai, she's posted to an alternative London. Their mission - to retrieve a dangerous book. But when they arrive, it's already been stolen. London's underground factions seem prepared to fight to the very death to find her book. Adding to the jeopardy, this world is chaos-infested - the laws of nature bent to allow supernatural creatures and unpredictable magic. Irene's new assistant is also hiding secrets of his own.

Perhaps ok for teens
Revisado: 12-01-22
The slightly long winded prose didn't quite put me off. But the early interplay between a couple of characters felt like teen romance. It lacked the dignity and adult like emotions of say, Harkness' A Discovery of Witches, so despite being stuck in a traffic jam - I turned it off. Disappointed because the premise was intriguing, but this one, for me at least, was a dud. Hopefully Aaranovitch writes another Rivers title soon

Historia
The London Silver Vaults—for well over a century, the largest collection of silver for sale in the world. It has more locks than the Bank of England and more cameras than a celebrity punch-up. Not somewhere you can murder someone and vanish without a trace—only that's what happened. The disappearing act, the reports of a blinding flash of light and memory loss amongst the witnesses all make this a case for Detective Constable Peter Grant and the Special Assessment Unit.

possibly best yet
Revisado: 09-07-22
After a long withdrawal, I was stoked to see another inbthe series, but frankly a little worried that it might not work for me after such a gap. I need not have been concerned. This is a really good addition to the series. personally I prefer the audiobooks over reading because I see them as a collaboration between author and narrator and I'm so glad that their relationship continues. Kobna really brings these to life. his range is impressive and I feel he's committed to the project. Another great story in the series.

The complete collected series 1-5 of the gloriously daft Victorian romp Bleak Expectations. Gasp at the evil Mr Gently Benevolent, played by Mr Anthony Head! Weep at the trials of our young hero, Pip Bin, played by Master Tom Allen! Be moved to joy and sorrow by the remarkable narration of Mr Richard Johnson! Swoon at the fragile beauty of Pip's poor mama, played by Miss Celia Imrie! Wonder at the thespian prowess of Mr Geoffrey Whitehead as six different siblings!

a surprise treat
Revisado: 06-04-22
I bought this without a lot of confidence - but was pleasantly surprised. I'm a Brit who doesn't adhere to the sometimes popular conceit that British humor is the best. This was to my mind all that's best when Brit writers and performers hit the mark. Frequently ludicrous, but cleverly so, with just the right scattering of double-entendre to spice it up. The casting was really good and they made it work well. Really good stuff

Historia
All is not what it seems in the sleepy Welsh town of Llanfair. The snows have come late and the local police force (cute Adam and not-too-bright Polly) can't keep up with demand (the demand being: "I've fallen over on the ice! Help me!"). A man is found dead in a field and there's nothing suspicious about it...except for the fact that he appears to have fallen from a great height. Wales does have birds of prey but nothing that could carry a full-grown man. So how did he die? Bron is soon drawn into a very sinister group of families with ancient ties that echo to the present day.

Historia
Shadow magick occupies a critical but often misunderstood role in the rich history of witchcraft. This book explores topics such as the ethical use of animal parts and bones, blood magick, dark-moon energy, and other rarely discussed aspects of witchcraft. With a focus on ethically sourcing materials and suggestions for plant-based substitutions, author Kate Freuler provides much-needed information and hands-on techniques to help you strengthen your witchcraft practice, connect to nature, protect yourself (and your kith and kin), and know yourself in a deep way.

I really wanted to enjoy this. I've been running short on Kindle/audio combos on topics like this and had planned to ease the misery of rush our congestion with this. I am very disappointed. Reasons are many, but after an hour of listening I've stopped, not even willing to try and get my money's worth. Two key reasons will do, the first being that the author, rightly, has some points to make about our individual responsibilities with the topic and the inevitable duality present in the universe. But it could have been handled competently inside a few pages/minutes - an hour in and it had become repetitive enough to feel condescending. Second key reason, the narration. I felt that the tone and overly dramatic emphasis was suitable for a pre-teen work on fictional vampires and love interest, but not here. As adults we understand the significance of certain elements without overly dramatic signaling. As I say, I wanted to like this. Maybe it's for you, and maybe it isn't. I'll let you judge

narration suitable for a children's story
Revisado: 04-30-22
the story has promise and for a few minutes the narration held up, but it quickly became farcical enough to remind me that there's nothing worse than English or American actors doing a bad impression of each other's accents. coupled to some exaggerated extremes between characters, overly melodramatic inflection, and I managed an hour. worse, I had just listened to Daniel Davis narrate Darth Plagueris, so had an immediate reference point for Star Wars done well. I really wanted to enjoy this...

there's some excellent story elements here, but Ivd been listening in the car for well over 2 hours and - not wanting to spoil it for others - will confine myself to saying I feel like I've accidentally bought into a teen romance. It wasn't cheap, but I'll add this to a folder in my collection I have labeled "Regret buying ".
