Trigger Warning: violence against women, assault

Spoiler Alert

This is one of the first romance novels I ever read as an adolescent (I think I was 11 or 12 when I found it on our family's bookshelf). Back in the early 90's, I didn't know any better, and the book was terribly exciting; foreign countries, dashing voyages, so much tension! I picked it up again in hopes of finding the nostalgia I remembered.

This is not a romance novel I'd want my children to read. The heroine is a 17 year old girl who is raped by a man literally more than twice her age, gets pregnant. and is forced to marry him, then somehow falls in love with him. That is not love, it is Stockholm Syndrome. She is repeatedly accosted by multiple different men throughout the story, it's a running theme. The main characters don't communicate, and it causes several misunderstandings that move the story along.

I understand that the book was written in the 1970's, and things were different then. It's still problematic to romanticize the issues in this story.

They used the characters names, but not the characters as they have been developed so far? No spoilers, but none of the characters act as they should, and some pretty loose liberties have been taken with ones that the original author disposed of. These are not the Lisbeth and Blomkvist you know.

The narrator is a little inconsistent

The story is good, I like a book that I can get really immersed in and just experience it. The narrator switches up pronunciations between mama and mamar, papa and papar, and it throws me out of the story. Overall, a good book, but one I think I would like better in print or as an e book.

Hecate has three syllables, and it pings against my head every time she mispronounces it.

The story is great, but the narrator is inconsistent, sometimes very quiet, sometimes very loud.

I actually loved this series. It's the hallmark of a good book, I think, to wrench emotions out of you that you weren't expecting.
