Historia
A man awakes on a boat at sea with no memory of who or where he is. He's not alone—there are six others, each with a unique set of skills. None of them can remember their names. All of them possess a gun. When a message appears on the onboard computer—Proceeding to Point A—the group agrees to work together to survive whatever is coming. But as the boat moves through the mist-shrouded waters, divisions begin to form. Who is directing them and to what purpose? Why can't they remember anything?

Fine novella presented as a novel
Revisado: 10-22-23
Decent story slam full of very familiar tropes. Zero character development and very short. Would not have used a $15 credit on it but would buy when it inevitably goes on sale.

Historia
Over the past two decades, Antony Beevor has established himself as one of the world's premier historians of World War II. His multi-award winning books have included Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945. Now, in his newest and most ambitious book, he turns his focus to one of the bloodiest and most tragic events of the twentieth century, The Second World War. Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, Beevor's provocative account is destined to become the definitive work on World War II.

Excellent overview
Revisado: 09-18-21
Concise overview of almost the entire series of major events in WW2. It’s was well put together with a compelling story that covered a lot but was also deep enough to feel like I learned something too. For a more (much more) granular level of retrial, the authors book on Stalingrad is also excellent.
My only quibble is with the narrator. While the narrators style of a English professor in a smoking lounge is fine for military history, and may even be expected, I use audible to listen while driving or exorcising and prefer a louder, clearer voice. My biggest complaint is his curious decision to use accents for American statements but no one else. His habit of dropping in a sort of New Yorker meets John Wayne accent throughout the book is weird, distracting and a little condescending.
Nevertheless, it’s a compelling book that flies by and manages to cover new ground on a well worn subject.

Historia
“It happened fast. Thirty-two minutes for one world to die, another to be born". An epic and gripping tale of catastrophe and survival, The Passage is the story of Amy - abandoned by her mother at the age of six, pursued, and then imprisoned by the shadowy figures behind a government experiment of apocalyptic proportions. But Special Agent Brad Wolgast, the lawman sent to track her down, is disarmed by the curiously quiet girl and risks everything to save her. As the experiment goes nightmarishly wrong, Wolgast secures her escape - but he can’t stop society’s collapse.

Darn near perfect
Revisado: 04-03-16
A near perfect story of an apocalypse. The details are fantastic and the scenario is great, but, what sets this book apart is that the characters are people you actually care about. Because they are rendered so realistically, when the world gives way your actually invested in what's going on instead of simply viewing it from a distance. Also, the brief (by this books standards) opening in the pre-collapse sets up a world that feels like a real future, yet one where it's believable that what's to follow could do so.
Great narrative as well. Highly recommended for new readers but it's also fantastic for those like me who read the book when it came out but want a refresher before City of Mirrors.
Finally: JC, prequel please! #morewolgast

Perfect Science Fiction.
Revisado: 01-11-16
One of my all time favorites. Highly recommended for people that have already read the book as well. You should have no trouble following if you haven't read it but the performance of the narrator is so good and the details are so rich that it just gets better with repeat listenings.
