I just finished the Audible of Long Shot. I’m in tears because I grew up in a domestic violet household. I’m ashamed as an adult to have thought of my mom this weak. She was actually caught up in an impossible situation. I realized this as an adult, as a child, I did not! Until, writing about my life in my memoir, We Are Not Our Secrets, I didn’t know about the things I just mentioned. I locked all of it away until three years ago at 63 years old because my father held me with a shotgun pointed at my face as I helped my mother when I was 11 years old. Generational cycles are affecting all of mankind in one form or fashion. Different kinds of cycles, different terrains, but they do affect all of mankind. Narcissistic behaviors, domestic violence, physical and sexual assaults, bullying, parental abandonments, etc. Nations were built to help nations not to help our emotional needs. Mankind is caught up in a patriarchy society that does not know how to maneuver our families. Kennedy Ryan has expertly told the story of Long Shot.

It was extremely difficult for me to hear, but it was necessary. Each story has a prevention within them. That’s why on my podcast, We Are Not Our Secrets, I allow adults to tell their stories that were never shared. There is power in telling our stories. I also am writing my second book on prevention. I am Joyce Smith, A.K.A. Jj, and I thank you Kennedy for this wonderful tribute to society! XOXO for the bravery and dedication for your friend in telling their story.

Viola Davis is phenomenal. I knew I wanted to hear her book audibly rather than read her book. And that decision was stellar. I’d like to talk to you one day about the domestic violence. I experienced it in my household as well.. It was also extreme. I dealt with racism. I was born in 1957, a baby in the Jim Crow era. Both racism and domestic violence starting as early as I can remember, 3 1/2 years old. I learned to overcome my trials in my memoir released January 20, 2023, We Are Not Our Secrets by Joyce Smith. Thank you for this gift, Finding Me, and confirming my journey. As a trauma survivor I often crave validation, like many of us, even if it’s my story. My life was so incredibly similar to yours in almost every aspect. Of course, uniquely my own. My father was educated. Domestic violence has no income or educational bracket it is bound within.

Your voice is comparable to only James Earl Jones. Who is top of the narrators. Now there’s you! I will never forget Finding Me and I want to give you a big hug and talk about it with you. One day.

Love you,
Your sister, by way of life similarities too numerous to explain in a review.
(Perhaps, you can read my memoir. It would be the honor of a lifetime. I grew strong like you while remaining weak until I said, We Are NOT Our Secrets! I am glad you also found self-love.)

My guest are candid, intelligent, brave, influential and strong. They are adults that have overcome their environmental influences despite all odds. Hosting We Are Not Our Secrets is an honor! — Jj
