Historia
For years as an award-winning war reporter, Sebastian Junger traveled to many front lines and frequently put his life at risk. And yet, the closest he ever came to death was the summer of 2020 while spending a quiet afternoon at the New England home he shared with his wife and two young children. Crippled by abdominal pain, Junger was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Once there, he began slipping away. As blackness encroached, he was visited by his dead father, inviting Junger to join him.

Fascinating
Revisado: 03-09-25
A moving, extraordinary account of life and near-death. This is a concise, yet detailed summary of an intense experience. Junger writes beautifully… and narrates this book in a wonderfully soft, but engaging voice. I listened, feeling like a fly-on-the-wall during the most fascinating therapy session. It’s as though we’re actually hearing him work through, and come to terms with these experiences in real-time.

Ione truly poured her heart into this. The story resonates beautifully, and comes across and honest and humble. Her narration is calm, poised, and charming. I haven’t finished a book so fast in a long time. Loved it.

Historia
One of the most influential, admired, and innovative women of our time: fashion designer, philanthropist, wife, mother, and grandmother, Diane von Furstenberg shares stories about becoming the woman she wanted to be. Diane von Furstenberg started out with a suitcase full of jersey dresses and an idea of who she wanted to be - in her words, "the kind of woman who is independent and who doesn’t rely on a man to pay her bills."

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Absolutely incredible. This is a MUST READ.

Where does Unbroken rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I wish I could use osmosis to have every person on earth read this incredible true story of perseverance, bravery, and endless determination. I believe it would change the way our generation pities itself, its circumstances, and challenges. These were MEN. Brave, bold, resilient, and self-sacrificing men. We should all be so grateful to men like Louis Zamperini, and so grateful to Laura Hillenbrand for telling his story so well. She clearly poured her heart into this - and it shows. I can't praise this book enough.

Historia
An American girl finds her prince in this "fun and dishy" (People) royal romance inspired by Prince William and Kate Middleton. American Bex Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister Lacey was always the romantic, the one who daydreamed of being a princess. But it's adventure-seeking Bex who goes to Oxford and meets dreamy Nick across the hall - and Bex who finds herself accidentally in love with the heir to the British throne. Nick is wonderful, but he comes with unimaginable baggage.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Total waste of time. Unfortunately it was chosen as part of a book club I joined - and subsequently quit. This story is ridiculous and annoying. I feel sorry for the narrator - no performance could have saved this festering turd of a story.

Historia
It was the most influential marriage of the 19th Century - and one of history’s most enduring love stories. Traditional biographies tell us that Queen Victoria inherited the throne as a naïve teenager, when the British Empire was at the height of its power, and seemed doomed to find failure as a monarch and misery as a woman until she married her German cousin Albert and accepted him as her lord and master. Now renowned chronicler Gillian Gill turns this familiar story on its head, revealing a strong, feisty queen, and a brilliant, fragile prince working together to build a family.

WOW! I learned so much.
Revisado: 10-05-15
What did you love best about We Two?
Ok, I will freely admit that I am a history nerd, and I know a lot about Victoria and Albert. However, this book was enlightening and intimate. Gill did an amazing job of digging up personal facts and tidbits that even a seasoned history buff (read: nerd) will appreciate and hear told for the first time here. I loved it. Furthermore, Rosalyn Landor's voice is gorgeous.

Historia
In Unfamiliar Fishes, Sarah Vowell argues that 1898 might be a year just as crucial to our nation's identity, a year when, in an orgy of imperialism, the United States annexed Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Guam, and invaded Cuba and then the Philippines, becoming a meddling, self-serving, militaristic international superpower practically overnight. Of all the countries the United States invaded or colonized in 1898, Vowell considers the story of the Americanization of Hawaii to be the most intriguing.

Well done...
Revisado: 10-05-15
Would you listen to Unfamiliar Fishes again? Why?
This book was very well-researched, and provoking. Growing up in Hawaii, the historical trauma hits close to home, and I appreciated the way Vowell approached it. Respectful, factual, and smart... I recommend this book to everyone. Especially those ignorant of the State's tragic and tumultuous history. My only complaint - and I feel weird even sayingn this, as normally I prefer an author to read their own work; however, PLEASE don't let Sarah Vowell narrate her own books anymore. I'm begging you. Her voice is great in a cartoon, but it wrecks the impact of this material.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Not read a single word of this story aloud.

Historia
This gripping story of courage and achievement is the account of Robert Falcon Scott's last fateful expedition to the Antarctic, as told by surviving expedition member Apsley Cherry-Garrard. Cherry-Garrard, whom Scott lauded as a tough, efficient member of the team, tells of the journey from England to South Africa and southward to the ice floes. From there began the unforgettable polar journey across a forbidding and inhospitable region.

Puts things into perspective...
Revisado: 10-02-15
"I would never complain about heat again" that sentence really stuck with me - as did many more. This was not an easy book to get through, but Cherry's astute and sometimes humorous observations about the polar expedition, about Scott, about the men of this era... and about penguins proved well worth the time and effort. This would be a good book for a man coming-of-age in what is comparatively, a different world. A good book for anyone caught up in their own importance. It definitely made me rethink my own insignificant complaints.
