Historia
The era known as Reconstruction is one of the unhappiest times in American history. It succeeded in reuniting the nation politically after the Civil War but in little else. Conflict shifted from the battlefield to the Capitol as Congress warred with President Andrew Johnson over just what to do with the South. Johnson's plan of Presidential Reconstruction, which was sympathetic to the former Confederacy, would ultimately lead to his impeachment and the institution of Radical Reconstruction.

short but excellent
Revisado: 12-04-20
Guelzo is an excellent historian who relates history with humor. This is a good overview for people with little familiarity with this era. I love Guelzo's Union and civil rights perspectives and try to download as much of his work as possible. The narration was satisfactory, but Guelzo's own narration is even better.

very detailed history of JFK's loss and recovery
Revisado: 12-04-20
One of the most detailed accounts of the loss of the PT 109 and JFK's heroic recovery. Seems to be well researched using modern and first hand sources. The book also provides background on Kennedy's upbringing and much subsequent history. Although hagiographic, it does not gloss over JFK's flaws. You may not agree with the author's conclusion that the loss of the 109 was the major incident informing the rest of his life, but JFK's courage, calm, resolve, leadership and regard for his crew cannot be gainsaid,

Historia
Admittedly small and vulnerable, PT boats were, nevertheless, fast - the fastest craft on the water during World War II - and Dick Keresey's account of these tough little fighters throws new light on their contributions to the war effort. As captain of PT 105, the author was in the same battle as John F. Kennedy when Kennedy's PT 109 was rammed and sunk. The famous incident, Keresey says, has often been described inaccurately and the PT boat depicted as unreliable and ineffective.

Compelling personal perspective well read
Revisado: 12-04-20
This memoir give's Keresey's personal history from college to post-war, but concentrates on his experiences as a PT Boat captain and later as group commander. He provides great detail on PT Boat operations and his missions. His perspective is very human, from his mistakes, fears, failures and accomplishments.; It tells of how Keresey grew from an inexperienced newbie to admired leader. My esteem grew as I read his narrative. Don't expect a broad perspective about the South Pacific War--it's in other books. But no other book details the actions of PT Boats. It also has interesting sidelights about JFK.
This is also one of the best-narrated Audible productions. A warm and expressive reading.

Historia
Emerging from France's catastrophic 1940 defeat like a bedraggled and rather sinister phoenix, the French State – better known to history as Vichy France or the Vichy Regime after its spa-town capital, stands in history as a unique and bizarre creation of German Fuhrer Adolf Hitler's European conquests. A patchwork of paradoxes and contradictions, the Vichy Regime maintained a quasi-independent French nation for some time after the Third Reich invasion.

worst narration ever
Revisado: 12-04-20
while the book is a good brief overview of Vichy, it receives the worst narration of any Audible book I have heard. Is there an editor in the house? Will somebody please tell the narrator, Crockett, how to pronounce Philippe Petain (not Philleep-pay) and Vichy (not Vee-shay). Crockett mispronounces not only the majority of French and German names and places, but English words as well

Historia
In 1945, Edith Farnsworth asked the German architect Mies van der Rohe, already renowned for his avant-garde buildings, to design a weekend home for her outside of Chicago. Edith was a woman ahead of her time—unmarried, she was a distinguished medical researcher, as well as an accomplished violinist, translator, and poet. The two quickly began spending weekends together, talking philosophy, Catholic mysticism, and, of course, architecture over wine-soaked picnic lunches.

This is the most well-read book that I have heard yet. Kimberly Farr has a clear, pleasing and warm delivery.
This book offers a comprehensive history of the house, its patron and architect. Places the building and builders in context.

I’ve listened to many excellent Great Courses but this is by far the best. Prof. Guelzo’s delivery is expressive and clear. Likewise his writing has humor and strikes a balance between facts and interpretation.
The title of the course is somewhat misleading. Although other topics are lightly covered, the course is mainly the military history of the Revolution. I’m not unhappy with the coverage but the course description could be more accurate.

covers only part of the native American story
Revisado: 07-25-18
These lectures covered in great detail the relations between native Americans and the non-native people. I learned a lot, particularly form the perspective of the indigenous people. The indigenous peoples' perspective is usually given short shrift in popular history, so these lectures are important in presenting that point of view. The lectures, however, were not intended to be, and were not, objective in this respect. Overall, very well presented and for me, new information and perspective.
I thought that the course description was misleading. I expected the lectures to cover Indian family life, the differences between tribes and the evolution thereof, the various ways of obtaining sustenance, the various religions, social and political structure, migrations, housing, relations between the tribes, artistic expression, technological development, languages and language groups. None of this was touched on, except in the context of and for the purpose of explaining native-non-native relations. I guess these topics are for another lecture series.

Why we think it’s a great listen: You thought he was a stodgy scientist with funny hair, but Isaacson and Hermann reveal an eloquent, intense, and selfless human being who not only shaped science with his theories, but politics and world events in the 20th century as well. Based on the newly released personal letters of Albert Einstein, Walter Isaacson explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos.

Revisado: 07-28-17
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Isaacson's book is well researched and provides insight into Einstein's character. It also explains the scientific theories in a comprehensible way. He provides skepticism of some famous Einstein myths. The writing is excellent, without cliché and with the appropriate tone for such a biography. Do we need another Einstein biography? Even if we don't, this is the one general interest biography to read.
What about Edward Herrmann’s performance did you like?
warm reading with correct amount of emotion. Generally correct pronunciation of scientific terms, persons' names and German words. This is one of the best readings I've heard in Audible
Any additional comments?
Recommended for its research, writing and narration. I give it high marks all the way around.

Historia
The 25 years between the onset of the French Revolution in 1789 and the Bourbon Restoration after Napoleon in 1814 is an astonishing period in world history. This era shook the foundations of the old world and marked a permanent shift for politics, religion, and society - not just for France, but for all of Europe. An account of the events alone reads like something out of a thrilling novel.

Masterful survey
Revisado: 03-22-16
This is a comprehensive survey of the French Revolution and its aftermath. Prof. Desan covers the ground thoroughly, but at the same time makes the subject interesting. She gives both detail and insight into broad trends. I feel much more conversant with this era of French history than before. Even at the end of 48 lectures, I would've asked for more.

Historia
When Japan attacked the United States in 1941, argues Eri Hotta, its leaders, in large part, understood they were entering a conflict they were bound to lose. Availing herself of rarely consulted material, Hotta poses essential questions overlooked by historians in the seventy years since: Why did these men - military men, civilian politicians, diplomats, the emperor - put their country and its citizens in harm's way? Why did they make a decision that was doomed from the start?
