Comprehensive account of Murdaugh chicanery
Revisado: 01-12-25
Like many others, I followed the case, watched the trial, and listened to podcasts. This book goes beyond any previous coverage I have heard, delving deep into just how shady this family was and for how long. What a pack of despicable liars and grifters, blatantly exploiting poor, uneducated, and desperate people. Alex took the family propensity for exploitation to the next level. May he rot in prison.

Relentlessly grim
Revisado: 08-03-24
I enjoy literary fiction and finely honed sentences as much as the next person, but this was a painful slog. Not a single of humor, levity, or brightness. I mean, I wasn’t expecting beach reading, but this was tantamount to punishment. I quit after 5 hours. Life is too short for self-inflicted torment.

Historia
Riverside Close is a picture-perfect community. The six exclusive and attractive houses are tucked far away from the noise and grime of city life, allowing the residents to enjoy beautiful gardens, pleasant birdsong, and tranquility from behind the security of a locked gate. It is the perfect idyll, until the Kentworthy family arrives, with their four giant, gas-guzzling cars, gaggle of shrieking children, and plans for a garish swimming pool in the backyard. Obvious outsiders, the Kentworthys do not belong in Riverside Close, and quickly offend every last one of the neighbors.

Can’t wait for the next installment!
Revisado: 05-28-24
I have over 700 books in my Audible library and the Anthony Horowitz/Hawthorne books are some of my very favorite. Reminiscent of golden age murder mystery novels, the plots are clever with a wry humor that amuses without devolving to slapstick (not that I mind slapstick, but it wouldn’t go here). The characters are well-drawn complete with gradually unspooling back stories. Rory Kinnear as narrator takes it to the next level. Bring on the next one!

Historia
In August 2015, Limerick man Jason Corbett was murdered by his wife, Molly Martens, and her father, ex-FBI agent Tom Martens, in the bedroom of their luxury North Carolina home. He had been savagely beaten to death with a baseball bat and brick while his children slept nearby. For his sister, Tracey Corbett-Lynch, and the rest of his family in Ireland, it was just the beginning of the nightmare that would involve a custody battle, an online hate campaign, and, ultimately, the gripping trial that would lead to her conviction.

Terribly sad story with terrible narration
Revisado: 04-21-24
The narrator could not seem to get any accents right and has an extremely annoying way of lengthening the last syllable of every sentence in a distracting and melodramatic way. Almost gave up. Book makes no pretense of unbiased perspective, so no surprises in what was portrayed. It could have benefited from much crisper editing, as it seemed many anecdotes and quotes were repeated unnecessarily.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Bittersweet observation of human condition
Revisado: 10-23-23
Past and present. A tender reflection on what it means to be forever outside of the mainstream and the never ending tendency of humans to delude themselves into believing the “other” is somehow both inferior and threatening. This plays out over and over throughout history as we see it still today. This book highlights the best and worst of humanity and shows we can still find a way to live. Fabulous performance too.

Newly married and navigating life with a preschooler as well as her adopted adolescent son, Manon Bradshaw is happy to be working part-time in the cold-cases department of the Cambridgeshire police force, a job that allows her to potter in, coffee in hand, and log on for a spot of Internet shopping - precisely what she had in mind when she thought of work-life balance.

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

Unbelievable true story
Revisado: 05-17-23
A fascinating and well-researched account of a historical event that reads like a thriller. It is difficult to conceive of the suffering and hardships these men endured. That any of them survived is almost unfathomable. And through all of it, how could any of them have possibly have written much less preserved contemporaneous accounts?
I found the narrator to be mildly irritating, but not to the point where I considered abandoning the book.

Criminologist Martin Knight lives a gilded life and is a thorn in the side of the police. But then his wife, Liz, goes missing. There is no good explanation and no sign of Martin.... To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard who is drawn into the investigation. Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

Embarrassing stereotypes galore
Revisado: 03-06-23
If the author of this book has ever had a relationship with a woman that lasted more 2 weeks, I’d be shocked. Seriously - rescuing a damsel in distress? Younger women hopelessly attracted to middle-aged male? And that’s after that artless attempts at “literary” descriptions. Sorry, but no book that uses terms like “rippling back muscles,” “tight buns,” and “raven-haired” in an un-ironic manner can make any pretensions to serious writing. Inane swill. Couldn’t get through it.

Historia
Dorothy Graham is dead, which is inconvenient, not least for her. Luckily, she has planned for this eventuality. Now, if any of the truly dreadful people she is related to want to get their hands on her money, they’re going to have to do so via a fiendish difficult and frankly bizarre competition of Dorothy’s devising. After all, just because you’re dead, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a last laugh at the expense of people who made your life miserable.

Laugh out loud funny with a warm heart
Revisado: 09-23-22
I have more than 500 audiobooks in my collection and there are not many that have me guffawing away as I do housework. This one does. It is the literary equivalent of slapstick but with no meanness of spirit. Loved the sly parody of “self-styled social media influencers!” Who on earth would ever be influenced in any by those people, other than to do the opposite of what they do? But I digress. This is a hilarious book well worth your time.
