Historia
The Periodic Table by Primo Levi is an impassioned response to the Holocaust: Consisting of 21 short stories, each possessing the name of a chemical element, the collection tells of the author's experiences as a Jewish-Italian chemist before, during, and after Auschwitz in luminous, clear, and unfailingly beautiful prose. It has been named the best science book ever by the Royal Institution of Great Britain and is considered to be Levi's crowning achievement.

Boring
Revisado: 01-07-25
I am curious, like science etc. I have a degree in math and read a lot across the panoply of oceans, centuries and tongues. I’m also deeply interested in Jewish history and am studying Italian history with enthusiasm recently due to a planned trip there. In short I had many reasons to look forward to reading this book. Yet it dull, dull, dull. The last 2 stories ate better than the rest, but that is a low bar. And the narration was utterly void of passion.

Historia
Charming, vibrant, witty and edifying, The Life of Samuel Johnson is a work of great obsession and boundless reverence. The literary critic Samuel Johnson was 54 when he first encountered Boswell; the friendship that developed spawned one of the greatest biographies in the history of world literature. The book is full of humorous anecdote and rich characterization, and paints a vivid picture of 18th-century London, peopled by prominent personalities of the time.

Extraordinary reading of the apotheosis of English biography.
Revisado: 05-30-18
While the book itself is a famous and worthy classic, the reading done by the narrator is of a splendor to its source. David Timson creates a constellation of characters from across 18th Century United Kingdom, without ever intruding into the flow of the narrative. You will have a hard time believing that just one person created all these dozens of great historical figures as well as the less or unknown ‘cast of thousands’, each clearly distinguished and brought fully to life. What a performance!

Truly awful narration of a useful classic
Revisado: 04-21-18
The narration is unbelievably bad, with gross mispronunciations of even simple words like “Italian”, appear in roughly every other sentence; and a total lack of passion or involvement in what is being said. It actually sounds as sloppy and careless as if it a first take cold reading by a high school student who was drunk, stoned, sleep-deprived, or all three - except not as fun or funny, due to the pusillanimous voice of the hapless reader.
That the book being read is a classic and very thoughtful analysis of the rudiments of English grammar by one of its greatest exponents, just ads to the pin-headed absurdity of it all.

Historia
De Brevitate Vitae (frequently referred to as On the Shortness of Life in English) is a moral essay written by Seneca the Younger, a Roman Stoic philosopher, to his father-in-law Paulinus. The philosopher brings up many Stoic principles on the nature of time, namely that men waste much of it in meaningless pursuits. According to the essay, nature gives man enough time to do what is really important and the individual must allot it properly.

Grating, amateurish narration
Revisado: 03-28-18
Ok wisdom from 20 centuries ago, but the narration was poor and in an unpleasant voice which projected a whiny tone and often nonexistent or misplaced inflection.
