Just pass on it
Revisado: 05-15-24
Unlike a book with a plot, this one just tries to capture your attention mentioning old concepts from Dune books you liked and really goes nowhere fast. Or just goes nowhere at all. Skip it.

Harry Potter meets the Hunger Games but more at stake
Revisado: 09-21-23
I knew nothing about this book but saw how many great reviews it had so I jumped in and bought the series.
Red Rising started out in a way that made me wonder how I was going to put up with multiple books being, well, oppressed and dreary but then once the motivation and plot were set the book took off! I had a hard time putting it down. I love books of strategy and conquest and twists and this was all of that.
So glad I took a chance but sad I need to go to sleep tonight before I begin the second book. Well done!

Perseverance!
Revisado: 04-11-21
It wouldn’t be the Wild West if there weren’t bad guys, and you’ll learn to resent the guys who are making it difficult for the folks of The Walking Y to just eke out a living. The story grows on you and you’ll grow to cheer on the kids who take on a lot of responsibility to not return to a dead end life. Hard work is a joy when you’re in good company! Jason Markiewitz is a natural to narrate this book—he deserves a gold star for guiding the reader through this plot!

Historia
In the high mountains of Tibet, rumors are spreading. People whisper of an outbreak, of thousands of dead, of bodies pushed into mass graves. It is some strange new disease...a disease, they say, that can kill in minutes. The Chinese government says the rumors aren't true, but no one is allowed in or out of Tibet. At the Pentagon, admiral James Curtiss learns that satellite images prove that a massive genocide is underway. This is no disease. It's a weapons test. Chinese scientists have developed a way to kill based on a person's genetic traits.

Okay, so I love swords. Although I was briefly saddened to realize this was not THAT sort of book, the fast-paced plot, the depth of character development, the moving and perfect narration, and the ingenuity of this story really won me over. I usually like sci-fi fantasy, but I preordered Book 2 already!
Really, really a great read.

Revisado: 02-06-21
I listened to Blood Rain as a departure from my usual sci-fi genre. This murder mystery thriller kept the plot moving, with character development and plot twists. I listen to audiobooks on my commute and sometimes background noise can be bothersome. Kudos to the narrator, Jason Markiewitz, for having such a clear voice that neither construction, motorcycles, or demons from hell could get in the way of my listening!

If ever I had my life so concisely together!
Revisado: 01-03-21
In the era where we are visually spoonfed entertainment I would much rather read (or be read) a clever book of intrigue! Hearing new tales of the brilliant detective, Sherlock Holmes, really helps my mind focus on solving a crime rather than just doing household chores as I listen to my audiobooks. I find the voice and animation of the narrator, Jason Markiewitz, to be extremely pleasant and he continues to move the pace of these short stories along in good speed while allowing the listener to take the author's cleverness to understanding.
I appreciate the brevity of this collection, as it was something I could begin and finish the same day--what a great start to the new year!

This is where it all begins for Mithal
Revisado: 06-23-20
Third Power is the first of Robert Childs' books which transports his readers to Mithal, as Steve and his friends, Sonya and Scott, find they have much to discover about themselves and their new world. How did they get there? Read the book! Let's just say that some of the characters are rather reluctant travelers but are led by their heart and sense of responsibility for doing what is right. Mithal is a world of magic and fantastical creatures and Childs does a great job in introducing various races and how they interact. Steve must learn of his magical powers and how to use them, and as he does he learns much about himself. He must learn how to control his skills to defeat Azinon, usurper to the throne, and save Mithal from a magical plague which is killing without discrimination. Sources say that Childs conceived this plot when he was Steve's age and his narrator successfully conveys the senior in high school who just wants to move onto college and really start his life. It's also apparent that Childs loves the martial art of rapier because his fight scenes are well described and make sense, something a sword enthusiast would enjoy. This book is over 23.5 hours long and it's a great read! I hope we do not have to wait too long to return to Mithal!
Third Power has a sequel, Fourth Power, which is available in print but not yet in audiobook form.
