Historia
Evan Smoak is a highly trained former government assassin who has survived for years by keeping his circle to a few trusted confidants and a strict code he calls “The Ten Commandments.” But when Evan suddenly finds himself at odds with his oldest friend, all the rules he lives by shatter—and the consequences are murderous. Tommy Stojack might be Evan's best friend in the world. He’s a gifted gunsmith who has created much of Evan's own weapons and combat gear. But now, he has apparently crossed one of Evan's hardest lines and their argument explodes into open warfare.

A Thriller wrapped in humanity
Revisado: 05-07-25
Hurwitz mixes gruesome assassin secrets with a probing debate of our humanity. Dialectic rather than didactic like many thrillers ( yeah I’m looking at you Carr/Terminal List).

Historia
For the last 100,000 years, we Sapiens have accumulated enormous power. But despite all our discoveries, inventions, and conquests, we now find ourselves in an existential crisis. The world is on the verge of ecological collapse. Misinformation abounds. And we are rushing headlong into the age of AI—a new information network that threatens to annihilate us. For all that we have accomplished, why are we so self-destructive? Nexus looks through the long lens of human history to consider how the flow of information has shaped us, and our world.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Great acting and production values
Revisado: 06-21-23
Wonderful free listen from Audible Originals -- although left on a cliffhanger with another season obviously in the wings. This was very well written and acted (packed with big names) with high production values. A pleasant, fun surprise.

Historia
In Riversend, an isolated rural community afflicted by an endless drought, a young priest does the unthinkable, killing five parishioners before being taken down himself. A year later, accompanied by his own demons from wartime reporting, journalist Martin Scarsden arrives in Riversend. His assignment is to describe how the townspeople are coping. But as Martin meets the locals and hears their version of events, he begins to realize that the accepted wisdom - that the priest was a pedophile whose imminent exposure was the catalyst for the shooting - may be wrong.

A Journo's Evolution from Witness to Participant
Revisado: 04-11-23
Everything clicks here with Chris Hammer's very smart examination of murder, drugs, corruption and mayhem in Australia's drought-stricken, western scrublands through the eyes of a Aussie journo struggling with PTSD .
There's a lot going on -- a lot. And this requires quite a bit of exposition. But it's wrapped up in clear, concise and sometime poetic prose as well as crackling dialogue that captures the Australian genius for descriptive naming, but still accessible to outsiders. It wasn't hard to follow on audio, but there were dozens of characters and plots to keep track of which might be easier for some through print. But regardless of the medium, well worth the investment.

Historia
A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. But after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her own ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild and lead the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.

Abrupt and unsatisfying ending
Revisado: 03-13-23
A rare misstep here for MC. Written more as a cliffhanger for what comes next with Bosch and Ballard, rather than
a satisfying stand-alone.

Historia
Sloan McPherson and the Underwater Investigation Unit have discovered a van at the bottom of a murky Florida pond. Sealed inside the watery tomb are the bodies of four teenagers who disappeared 30 years ago after leaving a rock concert. To authorities, it looks like a tragic accident. To Sloan, it looks like murder. Every piece of evidence is starting to connect to a string of cold case vanishings throughout Florida. Clue by clue, Sloan navigates the warm, dark waters where natural predators feed, knowing that the most dangerous one is still above the surface - nesting and dormant.

Compelling Underwater Investigation Series
Revisado: 02-22-23
The first book was a set up for the agency and the characters. But this one hits its "giant stride." Mayne has found a nice
niche here, but doesn't overfeed the dive nerds like me with elaborate gear descriptions or tech detail. The lead, Sloan McPherson is more human and likeable in this second book, although the sarcastic inner dialogue wears thin at times.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.

A Master Novelist Masters the Short Story
Revisado: 09-02-22
Don Winslow is an automatic order for me, kind of like anything with chile or lime, but in this and other short fiction works recently available and free Audible Originals, he proves that his two-fisted, character expository works great in shorter formats. The Heron was fun, fast and had a great twist. Ed Harris perfectly cast, as usual.
