A Great Mystery Thriller
Revisado: 04-04-22
Mystery thrillers can be hit or miss for me. Some work, some don’t . This one did for the most part. I believe there might be one hole in the plot, but I’m probably wrong. The story is a journey and I was grateful when it was over, as it leans into some really undesirable aspects of our society at large. It kept me guessing and that’s really what a mystery should do. This is Kat Rosenfields first novel and I hope her future efforts continue to be as clever and well written as this was. I don’t understand why the narration was divided between three but they do fine, if not really complementing each other. I actually only thought there were two, but I just saw three are credited. I feel it would have been better with just one. All in all, though, I recommend it.

Historical fiction done well
Revisado: 04-04-22
Gonna keep this short and to the point: this an very well written story that alternates between two timelines, engaging the listener in both the distant past and the present of what was Assyria and is now Iraq. I’ve been listening to Paul MM Coopers Fall of Civilizations podcast since it started and he is nothing if not thorough and meticulous with details. While I was hoping he would narrate this book, like he does his podcast, I came to quickly appreciate Lara Sawalha’s talent. As the narrator she turns in an stellar performance. It’s not an exaggeration when I say I wish her performance was the benchmark for all others to clear. She distinguishes each character with their own voice and her elocution is flawless. She is a pro and I hope to encounter her in more books in the future. This is an easy recommendation for anyone that appreciates historical fiction performed by a top notch professional.

Surprised by how much I enjoyed this.
Revisado: 05-08-15
I don't usually have any interest in compilations, but this one really works because of the the common narrative. Cudo's to MacLeod Andrews for a stellar performance! I had to check a couple of times to be sure there weren't multiple readers in the credits. Of all the stories, the only one I couldn't listen to was the Burroughs John Carter of Mars story. Just couldn't do it. What really impressed me was the authors abilities to really emulate the historical figures they embodied in their stories. I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Neal Carey is not your usual private eye. A graduate student at Columbia University, he grew up on the streets of New York, usually on the wrong side of the law. Then he met a P.I. who introduced him to the Bank, an exclusive institution with a sideline in keeping its wealthy clients happy and out of trouble. They pay Neal's college tuition, and Neal gets an education that can't be found in any textbook, from learning how to trail a suspect to mastering the proper way to search a room. Now it's payback time.

It's got a good pace, but...
Revisado: 05-08-15
This story didn't really do much for me. It's well written and the characters are all fleshed out, but the narrative wasn't really all that engaging. I never felt like I was really interested in how it turned out. I honestly gave it a shot because I saw that Joe Barrett reads it and he is excellent. I don't have a great interest in detective stories, so maybe I'm not really the best judge of this book. I don't think I'll be coming back for any of the sequels.

Excellent from beginning to end
Revisado: 05-08-15
Rolled the dice with this one and it was worth it. With all the iteratives of zombie fiction, it's hit or miss to come up with something new. I was pleased with the pace and it set an excellent tone for suspense and mystery. Well crafted and performed, I couldn't come up with anything I didn't like about it. If you try it and don't like it, it's because you don't like zombie apocalypses.

Christopher Snow is the best-known resident of 12,000-strong Moonlight Bay, California. This is because 28-year-old Chris has xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a light-sensitivity so severe that he cannot leave his house in daylight, cannot enter a normally-lit room, cannot sit at a computer.

My favorite character from Dean Koontz
Revisado: 04-06-15
I appreciate Dean Koontz for his far fetched ideas and ability to craft them into plausible narratives. Not all of his stories click with me, but this one does. Christopher Snow is by far my favorite of his creations, despite the fact his story has been put on the back burner while the author ran with Odd Thomas. No hard feelings, things are fine where he left them and I hope he returns to tell us more when he's ready. However, I digress. This is the first of two books involving Christopher Snow and his life in Moonlight Bay. Written in first person, we are taken into a world of creepiness and cleverness blanketed by the tranquility of a coastal California town with dark secrets. Secrets that Christopher Snow is destined to uncover and in the process, stand to lose all that is dear to him in his isolated life of living with xeroderma pigmentosum. With solid friends and a dog that seems to be more than a dog, he takes us on an unlikely adventure into a night of conspiratorial revelations, lies and betrayals.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Thoroughly fun and mysterious
Revisado: 04-06-15
This one really took me by surprise. Audible recommended it and for that I am grateful. I am no longer in touch with pop culture, at least not like I was as a child, but this story taps into so much of what my childhood was about. The best way I can describe it is it's like a Scooby Doo adventure for adults, with a solid well paced story that I found myself wanting to be a part of. This is one that I look forward to revisiting in few years. Also, Ray Porter knocks it out of the park!

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

A slow burn of a story that never really ignites
Revisado: 04-06-15
This book was pitched by Audilble because I had purchased Gone Girl. There's really no comparison, either in story or writing style, but both authors are, ostensibly, female, so I guess that's enough to draw a parallel...~ This story stands on it's own just fine and is worth a listen if you like thrillers with a self destructive protagonist. It's a bit slow, in the sense that it takes a bit of time for the story to find it's pivotal moment. Once it does it's like watching someone make mistake after mistake and not being able to help or stop them. If you have experience with someone abusing alcohol, this story might be really unpleasant for you. I stopped a couple of times because I found myself reacting emotionally in a way that I don't seek from fiction. I took my time getting through it and don't regret it, but it makes for a tough listen when it hits a nerve the way it did with me. All that being said, it's well written and the performance and production are top notch.

Terrible audio quality
Revisado: 04-06-15
What disappointed you about The Woods?
The audio quality is so bad that I couldn't listen to it. It's like listening through a funnel.
Would you ever listen to anything by Harlan Coben again?
Yes, no hard feelings toward the author.
What didn’t you like about Scott Brick’s performance?
Scott Brick is a fine performer. He's got solid chops.
What character would you cut from The Woods?
I can't say as I didn't get past the first 15 minutes of the book.
Any additional comments?
Yes, I used the highest quality download. Yes, I tried deleting and re-downloading it to see if it was just a glitch. Both downloads were the same.
